It would be easier if the conference just went by the normal NCAA rules and he just sat out one year.

What drives me nuts (even about my own fan base) is the over the top homer-ism and my coach/team/players can do no wrong. Lots of ISU fans don't like Marshall because they think he whines to get every call. Personally, if someone is fighting for their guys, that makes them competitive, not a whiner. Here, Muller was listed as "begging" to get Teddy to play. Reality is both coaches are fighting for their guys. As a fan, I wouldn't want it any other way. I'd want my coach to fight and claw for every advantage. No different than players doing the same on the court. Unfortunately it will always rub others wrong. Some just can't look at it from the other side and say "I'd want my coach to do the same in that situation too."

As for the Dana Ford leaving early issue, I get why WSU fans and staff would be ticked, but you have to understand that getting a promotion and to your old school would be something nearly everyone would do. I'd be upset if that happened here but would understand.

A nice post.

Most of the post is good. Each of us sees this from our own perspective. The part that I disagree with is "normal NCAA rules". This would be treated the same in each other conference (Big 12, BIG, etc.). There is a reason for the rule as it stands in each conference and there were other options available for Hawkins when he decided to back out on WSU and then left the school where he may have become eligible. Hawkins could have decided to go to school in another conference (the down side is that he was not getting any love from Ohio State, and other places he wanted to go to). The other option and the one that Illinois State and Hawkins should have decided on is that he go the Juco route and graduate and then go to Illinois St. As was stated before, why have rules if they aren't enforced.

Why would Muller do that? He now gets Teddy for 4 years minus 2 games instead of for only 2 years if he went the juco route. Muller actually had a juco lined up for Teddy, but that fell through when he got into school.

I get the recent beef: Gregg, Dana, Jackie's foot, Cle's free throws, and (last but definitely not least) Teddy. It's adding up to great theater. But this unprecedentedly moronic ruling falls at the feet of Doug and his minions.

Actually we agree. Muller wouldn't have any reason to go the juco route but the MVC committee should have required it. That would be the way that everyone else in the entire nation would have had to go. No other conference would have passed this unprecedented ruling.

Why not just put this in Ford's contract? Why not just have the contract state that leaving before two years of service requires some sort of buyout? If keeping him that long was really such an important factor in his hiring, I don't understand why one wouldn't include it in his contract.

Maybe it was. I only said it was via handshake because I can't claim to know how his, or any other assistant's employment agreement/contract is structured.

Marshall had worked with Ford at two different schools. Maybe Marshall trusted Ford? Skipping out on a contract happens all the time. That's just a legal breach. A breach of a trust hits at a much more personal level.

A breach of trust? Ford was what the 3rd or 4th assistant on the staff? Ford was that critical to the success at WSU that he was on only a 2 year deal and when he had a chance to go to his alma mater and with a promotion that Marshall got upset??? I know I am being an IlSU homer but I don't understand the unhappiness about Ford. He wasn't that important to the success of WSU and the history since he left WSU would attest to that.

That sorta begs the following question then ----

How does one know that Ford ever gave a two year promise at all?

What "begs the question" is why you are here and why do you care?
