Northern Iowa @ Wisconsin-Milwaukee

I think UNI (3-3) is the only team in action tonight as they take on the UWM Panthers (7-2) in Milwaukee.

UNI currently leading 38-31 at halftime.

UNI shooting just 4-14 from 3 with some very ugly misses but 11-19 inside despite a significant size disadvantage after Tuttle and Buss both picked up 2 fouls early on.

Freshman Jeremy Morgan got the start tonight and has 4 pts to go with 3 rebounds, 2 blocks and 2 steals. He's made some very athletic moves on offense and defense although I think he is still trying to get used to the outside range as he's 0-2 on both 3 pt attempts.

Deon Mitchell has shredded the Milwaukee D and is tied with Chip Rank (3-5 from 3) with 9 pts for the team lead. Nate Buss has 8 with 7 rebounds.

Jordan Aaron is keeping the Panthers of Milwaukee afloat in his own with 11 pts, including a couple of absolute bombs from outside the arc.

Yeesh! When has UNI ever had a 17-0 run against them? UWM by 48-42 now with just over 13 minutes left.

We aren't real good right now. We need to get a lot better on defense!

Tough 2nd half for UNI in Milwaukee. Panthers dominated the first half on both sides of the ball and the only player for. Milwaukee able to do much was Jordan Aaron with some prayers from long range.

2nd half was a totally different story after Tuttle picked up a questionable 3rd foul and Milwaukee couldn't do anything wrong. Played strong D and shot lights outs both inside and out. Never seen such a dramatic change from both teams between 2 halves. UNI was up 42-31 after 1 minute into the 2nd half, but a Milwaukee 23-3 run (was probably even worse) basically ends it. Missed lay ups, missed jumpers, missed free throws. Just an unbelievable display of cold shooting that came out of nowhere for UNI and while they were able to slightly recover the confidence boost Milwaukee got from that run was insurmountable.

Really disappointed in the way we lost, not necessarily the loss itself. We absolutely dominated that team in the first and were scoring at near will inside of the arc but it magically disappeared in the 2nd. Not sure what happened other than Tuttle getting a quick foul but he only played for 5 mins in the first half. Nate Buss and Jeremy Morgan didn't see as much minutes down the stretch when Jake had our best 5 out there but I'm wondering if we could've mixed them in a bit more late. They were both playing really well and making good plays before that huge drought.

I was at the Loyola-UWM game a month ago, and was really impressed by the footwork and leadership abilities of sophomore juco transfer Matt Tiby. UWM was picked last in the HL, but Tiby is a player that could probably make the MVC 2nd team. All through the Loyola-UWM game, I was wondering how Tiby-- a 6'8" forward with great footwork-- managed to slip to the juco ranks. (Here's an article on his pathway to UWM: http://uwmpost.com/long-hair-dont-care- ... milwaukee/ )

UWM has already beaten Davidson on the road and won the Northern Illinois MTE. Their only loss besides Loyola is at home to DePaul. They're going to be a top 3 HL team if they all stay healthy and eligible, probably with an RPI around 120 by the end of the year. So it's not a really bad loss for the Panthers.

If UNI is the 3rd best team in the league, then we may be in trouble. They have been very vanilla thus far and not very impressive. And it's not like they've had a world beater schedule either. Decent teams sure, but very beatable ones for Top 3 Valley teams.

We are not currently a top 3 team in the Valley. We would be lucky to be a top 6 team right now. The defense and the rebounding needs to improve dramatically before we can be considered anything but a Thursday night team.

This could turn around since we are young, and we do have some talent though. I am not hopeful about the Iowa State game on Saturday. We could get beat really badly in Des Moines this weekend.

Maybe some of the Top 3 Valley teams this year will suck. Starting to look possible. Not everybody can play on Thursday night.
