He and his wife are both from the midwest (central Illinois), and they've been out west for 20 years. He wants to build something. I think he's seen the downside of "big-school" basketball.
I know people say things like that all the time, but he seems sincere about it.
If Drake becomes successful enough for somebody to want to hire him away, I think Drake can come up with the funds to keep him. They raised approx $9 million in 7-8 months for the new practice facility.....given that, I think they'd be able to raise the money needed to keep Giacoletti around.
The new facility should be ready in time for the next basketball season.....I think Giacoletti wants to see what he can do once it's completed. I know he thinks it's a hugely important thing for the program. His first recruiting class is very solid (yes, I know everybody thinks their class is great), he's got a new facility coming....I think he sticks it out.
These seem like odd assumptions to me, given two facts: Most coaches say some variation of "this is my dream job," even as they're actively looking for their next job, especially in the Valley (where only Jacobsen seems entirely immune; I won't include Marshall, because of the pay); and very few Valley schools have ever been able to come up with enough salary money to keep away other, bigger schools.
And if his requirements are mid-west, not a "big school," and something he can build, there are probably 10 other schools that'll meet those requirements and could pay him $1-1.5 million with better resources if he does well at Drake.
What do you actually think Drake's cap on salary will be long term? I've heard he's getting about $450k right now, which is a surprisingly good salary to start with, but it'll have to go up with winning, if we're assuming he's as good as he currently looks to be.
Don't get me wrong, I'd love for him to be as good as he looks right now and stay with Drake long enough to build something. Just not optimistic about it. It's very rare to see a highly sought after coach stay somewhere without the money/resources to keep them in place.
