Iowa @ Drake Saturday 12/18

It's been a week between games for the Bulldogs who are on a modest 2 game winning streak. Unless they have come a long way in the past week, it could get ugly for DU. They haven't responded well to defensive pressure, and Iowa likes to press. Also, Iowa is +7 in rebounding margin, Drake is -8.

Here's a blog from the Des Moines Register http://blogs.desmoinesregister.com/dmr/index.php/2010/12/17/vandeest-hitting-the-boards-but-now-faces-big-test/

This will not be an easy game. But it will be a good test to see how mentality tough our young team is. Iowa sounds mean and McCaffery seems like a solid coach who gets the most out of his squad. If Drake comes out flat like they have for most of the season, it could get real ugly. Hustle is going to be the biggest factor Saturday. The Bulldogs need Van Deest to play big. And it wouldn't hurt to get more highlights like this http://www.kcci.com/r-video/26112208/detail.html from Rice.

It certainly doesn't help that Drake is on break and that zero students will be attendance. I suspect there will be a large contingent of black and gold in the crowd. Can't help it, I suppose.

Anyway, GO DRAKE!

I'm not sure what the line is now, but this was opened with Iowa -4. If I were a betting man, I think I'd pick Iowa.

I think if the Bulldogs can hit three's early and get some good scoring off the bench they can win.
Iowa has definately cranked the coaching up a notch, as he seems to work the players and the officials the entire game. I don't know why but in these in-state games some times the opponents have a guy that just goes on an unconscious scoring binge, hitting every thing that is thrown up. I hope the bulldogs guard against that happening. I look for it to be a good game. A good measuring stick.

Iowa 59
Drake 52

Final

I give credit to the Bulldogs for making it close, but they couldn't overcome the dreadful start.

I was pretty amazed they overcame that start. For the first 5 minutes, DU played as poorly as they've played all year (and they've played some bad basketball this year). And then the other 35 minutes were relatively well-played. It was nice to see they made it a competitive game, but I wish they could've pulled it out.
