I think that's a more fair statement, I don't think it's as clear cut a picture in favor of Baker as rlh04d tried to paint. While his statement about pgs is probably accurate as there just isn't much to impress around the league behind FV and JO, there are a number of combo guards who it would be very arguable to try to elevate one as clearly superior. They all are quite good and I'm sure each fan base can make their arguments in favor of one or another. Personally I like Beane's potential above the others, but he has to show that level of consistency that would separate him first.

Marcus with his injuries this year never really settled in , yet his stats were similar prior to going out completely. Postseason awards tend to go either to veterans, players on winning teams, or statistical leaders, which is as fair and accurate way to separate close arguments as any I guess. In that regard Baker, Lemon, Odum, VanVleet, and Ballentine would be my guess on who get the nods one way or another.

If Baker hadn't sprained his ankle (badly) 2 weeks before Valley play started, I don't think we'd be having this discussion. Baker was definitely not playing the same after the injury than before.

Throw in a couple of tweaks to the ankle while it was still gimpy, and it was probably mid-February before Baker was around 100%. There is a legitimate discussion about the best combo guard in the Valley, or the best SG in the Valley when you compare the other guards to Baker's performance this year.

Unfortunately, in 2 seasons, very few Valley fans have seen a healthy Baker.

Even with a bum wheel, Baker is 4th in the Valley in A/TO ratio, he's among the league leaders in steals, he's got 20 blocked shots,

Fans can argue anything they want. Ron Baker will be in the NBA, the others won't, and every coach in the Valley would start him. He's a better all around player than Marshall, Beane, or Balentine. Those guys are very good players and I wouldn't have them far behind them ... But I would absolutely have them behind him, and I don't think there are many honest people here who wouldn't agree.

I've listened to enough opposing coaches rave about him and I've seen enough scouts closely watching him to know this isn't empty fan boasting. Saint Louis' coach gushed over him for several minutes as one of the best players in the country on the ESPNU podcast, and that was a good month or two after playing us.

Washpun finishes the season with a 7 point performance against Indiana State...doesn't sound impressive...then you look and see he had 8 boards, 7 assists, a steal, and ZERO turnovers and fouls...

And the Nate Buss/Khristian Smith debate got a whole lot clearer.

Buss had 14 pts 11 boards and 2 blocks in 26 mins (5-10 from the floor including 4-4 from 3)

Smith with 15 pts and 4 boards in 28 mins (6-10 shooting) and was on absolute fire in the first half.

Each committed a turnover by the way.

Yep, I think we all know the obviouse choice for 6th Man...

Per 40 stats before today (site I use hasn't updated yet) for all games

Buss
FG Made Per 40 8
FG Att Per 40 14
3pt FG Per 40 3
3pt FG Att Per 40 6
FT Made Per 40 3
FT Att Per 40 3
Points Per 40 21
Rebounds Per 40 9
Off Rebs Per 40 3
Def Rebs Per 40 7
Assists Per 40 1
Steals Per 40 1
Turnovers Per 40 1
Blocks Per 40 1

Smith
FG Made Per 40 6
FG Att Per 40 13
3pt FG Per 40 1
3pt FG Att Per 40 4
FT Made Per 40 4
FT Att Per 40 5
Points Per 40 18
Rebounds Per 40 7
Off Rebs Per 40 2
Def Rebs Per 40 5
Assists Per 40 2
Steals Per 40 1
Turnovers Per 40 2
Blocks Per 40 0

So....yeah....about that....

Buss takes 1 more shot per 40 but makes two more per 40. Scores about 3 points more per 40. 2 more boards per 40 and 1 more block and one less TO...
Smith has 1 more assist (which kind of makes up the PP40 difference)
Steals is even....

But yeah...for the total season it's pretty damn even....The numbers for conference games only are shifted some but the "who leads who" in each category is the same.

So...seems crystal clear...right...

Honestly it should be given to both of them. One more thing on Buss though, since returning from surgery he is 18-21 from behind the arc. That's not human.

Both would play plenty. Tuttle might start at the 5.
