Interesting that local reporters can't give homer votes.

WOW! That is a WSU heavy list. Four Shocker first teamers (can't vote for Tuttle) and three on the All-Defense team. Carter as the 6th man (can't vote for Buss, who I assume will win).

Buss might be able to *thank* his injury for the 6th man award if he does get it.

I don't think he was going to come off the bench anymore - but when he went down for 2 weeks Jacobson played with the line up some - benched Deon and started Marvin yet increased Deon's minutes - and found something that seems to work having won 5 of the last 6 with a complete head scratcher in DSM that UNI still nearly won.

Because of that when Buss came back he has accepted a bench role again (actually might not be the *6th* man...he may be 7th....but both he and Deon come in at the same time I guess). 19 mpg 21-43 (49%), the affor mentioned 3 point %, just under 11 PPG (with one game of zero), 6 boards per game (one with zero), less than 1 TO per game, less than 1 PF per game....

Going back to the 4 games before that and it gets better. The game he got injured he had 5 points and 2 rebounds in 2 minutes. The thee games before that he averaged 17ppg and 6 boards.

I really hope UNI petitions for a 6th year. He probably shouldn't get it...but freaking Gibbs did...so...maybe.

I think that you make a big mistake and are trying to be too objective. If the media/coaches do their job correctly, they will look at the standings. How many times do you see the Champion 18-0 and second place 12-6 in a TRUE Round Robin race. With the culmination of the last week or two, it was the equivalent of an unconditional surrender. I doubt that we ever see this again but we do this year. The All League Team should support that.

I agree. There should be at least 3 Shockers on the ballots of voters NOT from Cedar Falls or Terre Haute (I think Tuttle and Odum can be justified in being honored, but since those voters can't include 1 of them then I think they need to include Baker/Cotton as a 4th) and of course Wichita (who aren't allowed to have any...man that's dumb).

My non-WSU first team:

Odum
Balentine
Jackson
Gulley
Tuttle

My question is: can this team beat the starting 5 for WSU?

VanVleet
Baker
Cotton
Early
Carter (not truly a starter, but the most productive post).

Who's the coach?

I think that those 5 probably win 6 maybe 7 if they played 10 times, yes Wichita's top 5 are good, but they win games with more than their top 5, they also have the best depth.

Is everyone just setting screens for Ballentine? If so, no. If not, then what does DJ do? Clap and yell encouragement?

I can't honestly say I have seen much of Carter or know much about him without looking at stats but I guess it depends on the definition of the award. Does it go to the best player who regularly came off the bench, or is it for the bench player who was the most valuable to his team? Personally I think it's a combo and in this instance I think Carter is hurt because his stats aren't spectacular, even though I remember you still stating that he was efficient in his minutes, so it's not a fair reflection. I also believe it's much easier to make the case that Buss and Smith were more valuable to their teams than Carter was to his.

This sounds silly, but because of all the talent on this Shockers team, Carter is almost penalized. He doesn't get the opportunity to display his skills to the extent that Buss and Smith do and it's really hard to assess him as clearly. It also makes it difficult for me to believe that without Carter the Shockers still aren't MVC Champs by a comfortable margin. Yes, I could definitely see them with an extra loss or two and no longer a 1 or 2 seed in a few weeks, but overall, would having Early Lufile and Coleby playing additional minutes to replace some of Carter's production (I'm simply picking those 3 since I'm guessing Carter is used mainly in the post at the 4/5) significantly alter the Shox outstanding season? They've steam rolled most teams and while Carter is a really good player, Marshall seems to have lots of options.

I can't completely speak for Khristian Smith, but I'd bet money that without his production this year yesterday's matchup with UNI is for Arch Madness seeding...possibly anywhere from 2-6. Smith had supposedly struggled as of late and look what happened to the Sycs. They're limping into St. Louis.

As for Nate Buss, he may be the biggest reasons (after Tuttle) that UNI finished the season looking like the team we expected at the start of the season. I'm pretty sure the Panthers lost each of the games he had to miss due to his knee injury and surgery, but as soon as he returned they went on a real hot streak. They had to win 5 of their last 6 to lock up 3rd and a month ago no one would've given the Panthers a snow balls chance in hell to do that. Especially if you told them that they'd lose to Drake. Since coming back from surgery (6 games) Buss is averaging just under 9 ppg and 5 rpg despite only playing around 19 mins/gm (I'm assuming because they have been wisely cautious with his knee following the surgery). He's also shot 86% from 3 (18-21) in that time which is just insane for a 6-9 forward or any player for that matter. His only "poor" game was his 0 pt effort against SIU but in that game we were essentially giving the ball to Tuttle in the paint or Bohannon/Morgan on the perimeter. Those 3 scored 19, 17 and 15 respectively (so 51 of 73 pts) in that game. Buss only played 15 mins that night despite picking up no fouls. Not sure if he was feeling alright but he did manage 6 boards in those 15 mins. My point being that without Buss UNI struggles to get to half as many wins and is a for sure Thursday night team. Without Buss his 20 mpg go to the likes of 6-6 Marvin Singleton and Chip Rank and true freshman Ted Friedman who scored a grand total of 15 pts this season. Singleton has really helped us on defense and rebounding since he began starting but he is nowhere near the offensive spark as Buss and can't replicate his length.

It's hard to know how to discuss the issue with you when you're admitting that you don't know anything about Carter other than glancing at his stats.

I'll grant you the point that he gets lost in the shuffle and discredited because of how good the WSU main four are. However, I do think Carter should be given credit ... for most of the season, he's been essentially the offensive force for WSU off the bench. Kadeem Coleby has been an offensive disappointment, as have Evan Wessel and Nick Wiggins. If Carter wasn't available to provide an offensive punch, WSU's team would be dangerously ineffective without the main players on the floor.

I'd put Buss over Carter for 6th man ... but it's pretty damn close.

You should probably start watching him, though. Carl Hall was an extremely effective 6th man two years ago on our 6 seed team. Carter beats him in most categories per 40 in their junior seasons:

Player Hall Carter
PP40 15.07 17.95
RP40 8.97 9.95
AP40 1.26 0.65
SP40 0.9 0.65
BP40 1.44 1.95
TP40 1.44 1.08
FG% 57% 54%
FT% 65% 66%

Carter's going to be a hell of a starter for another great WSU team next year. If he makes anywhere close to the jump in numbers Hall did as a senior, he's a 1st teamer when the minutes come.

No surprise here:

Gregg Marshall named MVC Coach of the Year. Hinson finished 2nd in the voting. Marshall got 39 of 40 first place votes.. Paul Lusk received the other.
