What do Panther fans think about the matchup with SIU?

I know that they split the regular season. It seems like UNI should have a definite advantage down low, with the Salukis having an edge on the perimeter. I am looking forward to watching this one.

I am not a Panther fan, but I will tell you what I think.

The Cats had better play Cat ball from horn to horn - low turnovers, low personal fouls, 75% free throws, tough defense. Even if the Cats do, it might not be enough.

As a Shocker fan, I would rather play the Cats than the Doggies.

SIU is playing well...but this is a match up that heavily favors UNI.

UNI was up 36-19 with 1:17 left in the first half. It was 11 at half and stayed between 10-12 until 64-52 with less than 5 minutes left. At that point SIU stopped missing...period...the last 4:49 they outscored UNI 21-2....and UNI just missed a jumper at the buzzer to tie.

UNI won the follow up by 19 but was up by 20+ most of the game.

In 80 minutes of basketball UNI has COMPLETELY dominated 75 mintes and 15 seconds of them. In that time UNI has outscored SIU by roughly 31 points.

In 2 games against SIU Tuttle has gone 22 ppg 8 rpg 4.5 apg on 15-27 from the floor and 13-15 from the line...They have zero answer...I mean zero answer for him. To go along with him Matty Bo is at 15ppg and Morgan at 10. Plus Tuttle has been on an absolute tear the last two weeks and Buss just stopped missing shots.

I said before the first SIU game it would take some crazy s*** for SIU to win..and it happened. The same thing is true in StL.

I thought we made them look silly in the last matchup and had we been playing with this type of defensive focus and intensity a few weeks ago there is no way we blow that enormous lead in Carbondale. We beat them in CF by nearly 20 and that was without Buss scoring a point as we limited his time and touches.

Salukis shot 26% from 3 against this D the last time out and Jackson, Beane and O'Brien all got to double digits but they also all played 30-33 mins. None of the other 9 SIU players got past 4-5 pts.

I wanted SIU over MSU and ISUr. Those teams seemed to matchup with us better. The Salukis post players couldn't guard or double team Tuttle without fouling.

Here's why that first matchup, in which UNI allowed the Salukis to gain some steam and eventually win a nail-biter despite being down by 12 very late, won't be repeated:

1) Chip Rank played 27 mins and started while Marvin Singleton and Nate Buss played a combined 18 mins. I guarantee you Chip is lucky to reach double digit mins in this one. Marv and Buss are better rebounders and scorers.

2) The defense has started to greatly improve with Singleton and Morgan seeing more mins and setting the tone from the git go. The Salukis offensive struggles in the last game are a testament to that.

3)Seth Tuttle. Averages 21.5 pts 8 rebounds and 5 assists this year against the Salukis. He's playing his best ball right now. Even when they tried doubling him last game he managed to find Bohannon and Morgan on the perimeter, who combined for 8-15 from 3.

Now I'm not saying the Salukis should go home by any means. Their trio of Desmar, Beane and O'Brien have been effective in scoring against UNI and Barry can be relied on for getting these guys ready for Friday. They definitely need to have a post player step up however. If they can get anyone going in the post on offense of defense then I fear it will be a long day for them. I'm also hoping the Panthers are focused on this game, despite the margin of victory in the last matchup. We haven't won in 3 years in STL so they need to get their act together and be ready to (metaphorically) punch SIU in the mouth.
[Insert snappy comeback]

Informative answers, thanks everyone. Sounds like Barry will be focusing on post defense all week.

I find these answers interesting. But don't they fit the theme of the entire UNI season, +15 at home, not so much on the road?

Perhaps the real question is, how will UNI perform at a neutral location. SIU might even bring double-digit students this year, so it could be a challenging environment.

That game fit the mold in terms of UNI getting an L on the road..but not how the games go.

UNI on nuetral court is 2-1 with the only loss to Maryland...

Like I said, SIU needs some crazy s*** to win this one.

Thats probably why uni has lost recently in the tourney so much. They underestimate teams and then they get beat. Watch out, if the players have the same attitude that you have then they are gonna do awful. You can't overlook any team in the valley. Considering you lost to loyola, bradley and siu, i would be careful counting siu out of this game.

Yeah....some random guy on a message board no connected to the team in anyway dictates the attitude the team has...

One of the strangest message board sayings that exists...

Teams and Fans can have similar attitudes without being connected. I guess my point was that if uni (players) have an attitude that they are unstoppable they will probably get beat. If they respect the opponents then they will play better.
