Turned down is a little strong.

But I digress, how high could WSU go to keep him? At some point I would think there isn't much difference between $2.5 mil and $3 mil and he would want to stay at a place he's built.

Of course, if KU, UK, Syracuse, and so on come calling, he's gone.

How about…didn't respond to an offer.

Wichita also has a lower cost of living than many places around the country.

A few reasons that Marshall would consider leaving WSU (all are hypothetical):

Doesn't like WSU AD (not an issue currently)/Really likes a different schools AD.

Tradition rich basketball program with more exposure and fan support.

Wants to play stiffer competition.

I believe their are some people out there that are truly great at their jobs but aren't totally motivated by money, power, and prestige. And by extension there have to be some coaches that fall into that category. Coaches that truly seem happy in their current position. So far that seems to apply to Marshall and Jacobsen. And Dana Altman in the past. Not that they will necessarily stay forever but that will stay a good long time despite "better" offers.

I think Wake Forest will at least talk to Marshall, not saying he'll listen too hard, but I do think they'll reach out, gotta at least listen when an ACC school calls.

The UCLA talks with Marshall were also during the NCAA tournament. He obvoiusly wasn't going to accept the position while WSU was still alive in the tournament. Had UCLA waited a few weeks, it could be a whole different story. I think Marshall makes $1.6 million at WSU, so to say he wouldn't consider Marquette is pretty foolish. Marquette was paying Buzz Williams was making $2.8 million a year and I would not be surprised if they offered Marshall more money. Turning down TWICE as much as you currently make, would be pretty rough to do.

Didn't NC State approach him several years ago?

Marshall isn't going to leave WSU for any school he doesn't consider a destination job. He simply makes enough and has a high enough level of success that he will be offered destination jobs. If his goal is to get an elite job, you don't leave a good thing and risk screwing it up, like most "midmajor" coaches have done in the past. Going to Marquette would be a lateral move at best in regards to ability to win, but require a rebuilding process, and thus derail his upward momentum.

I know it's Goodman, but this part makes logical sense.

Jeff Goodman ‏@GoodmanESPN 6m
Buzz Williams left Marquette for a variety of reasons, sources told ESPN. One of the biggest was new league/new TV package.

I also think since VPI canned the predecessor after just 2 years, Buzz had pumped tires dead set on finding a way out (as opposed to a destination job). VPI was likely tipped off.

I can't recall if Marshall was approached by NC State or not? I agree about Marquette though, that was be a terrible move, the new Big East is not your dad's Big East. That conference is not going to be a high level conference within the next few years here.

I think the Wake job would be a good gig, I got my Master's at Wake, good school, excellent recruiting area and it's the ACC. Wellman SCREWED up BIG time when he hired Bzdelik from Colorado 4 years ago. He needs to hit a home run with the next coach or Wake fans and alumni will lynch him up faster than you can say Go Deacs

From what hear from Milwaukee newspapers, Buzz Williams is kind of high-maintenance. Marquette paid him very, very well, and spends big on the program (their basketball budget per athlete is second in the country behind only Duke). His complaining about the FS1 contract is silly, that wasn't the Big East's problem this year. Fox is giving them far, far better coverage than ESPN would anymore, with their collusion with the big football conferences. And the network will only grow. The Big East's problem is, similar to the MVC this year, almost everyone was down at the same time. Georgetown was down, Marquette was down, Butler was down, St. John's was something of a disappointment. They're going to be better in the future, ESPN is on the downhill slide, the other networks plus internet are going to lead to more and more conferences looking at options outside of them.

Personally don't see Marshall going to Marquette. As mentioned, Marquette supports basketball very well...but so does Wichita State. Scheduling will continue to get better, he already knows he can make Final 4s from where he's at (and from the stories have read it sounds like he and his wife aren't big on moving their children around from school to school, good for them). No reason to mess with success. Maybe that changes in a year or two, maybe WSU continues to dominate the MVC and he gets bored with it, maybe he gets tired of fighting the resources of the BCS (or whatever call them) conferences. Marquette wants someone who sees it as a destination job, but from here it looks like leaving WSU for Marquette would basically be taking the same type of job.

Not buying any of this at all. Not one bit. I do think that the Big East has done an excellent job of finding strong Catholic programs dedicated to basketball as their primary identity. St. Louis over Butler is the only thing I would have done differently. They will be one of the best basketball conferences for a long time, and I feel that more schools should try and brand a regional identity (whatever that identity might be) with built in rivalries.
