To me , on paper, I'm not sure UNI isn't there now, and a couple other programs just a young stud or two maturing away. Interesting year at hand.
If there is something sports fans aren't known for, it's humility.
Before Gregg Marshall was at WSU, we had Turgeon for 7 years. In a decade dominated by Creighton and SIU, MT had 5 consecutive winning seasons, three consecutive 20 win seasons, and a sweet 16.
Gregg Marshall has been at WSU for seven years. After an 11-20 inaugural season (which concluded with him being kicked out of the Arch Madness Thursday night game), he was 17-17 in year two. Since then, he has had 5 consecutive seasons of 25 or more wins...something neither CU or SIU have ever done (has any other MVC team?). He's added an NIT championship, three straight NCAA births, a final four, and an undefeated regular season. Over the past 4 years, WSUs average record is 30-6. The Shockers have had the greatest four year run in the history of the MVC.
After a 21-0 MVC season we return an All-American and the MVC POY, the MVC DPOY, and another MVC first teamer that is considered one of the top five shooting guards in the country and a pre-season AA. Last but not least, we return the National COY.
Shocker fans are currently living in the greatest period in WSU basketball history. If ever there was a time to crow, it is now. As a whole, I don't think we've been over the top. Also, I think that the fans of other respective schools have appropriately balanced hate and respect towards the program. The next two years could see a significant rise in the Valley from top to bottom. To suggest that this league is missing a Big East middling this year is preposterous. The youth of this conference is about to explode onto a national level (this year or next) and I, for one, cannot wait for this season to get underway!
