Rothstein is a HUGE fan of the Redbirds. Congrats to Muller on the recognition.

Nice recognition, but he'll have to prove it this year. He hasn't proven anything yet, other than that he could significantly underachieve with a team predicted to be at the top of the MVC.

He overhauled the team, and definitely gets a pass on last year. We'll see how this year goes, though.

I agree with this. I haven't seen much that tells me he really is something exceptional. Recruiting wise he's done well but we all understand the job extends beyond that aspect.
[Insert snappy comeback]

I won't be impressed until he reaches #10 in the polls.

This seems very curious to me. Frankly I think he's underachieved.

I would say he significantly underachieved in year one and significantly overachieved in year two.

Have to give him credit for essentially overhauling his entire roster and still finishing better than most MVC teams (Drake, Loyola, Bradley) are able to do given years of build up and far better histories. All the while with little coaching resume and coming off an underachieving year. Last year was well done.

I'm all for giving him crap for finishing well below where IlSU should have two years ago, but we had them predicted for 8th last year, and he finished tied for fourth. That's a good job.

And also phenomenally embarrassing for most of the annual bottom dwellers.

Now I'm going to take a shower, because I feel dirty defending him.

I guess it's time for the venom to flow. I do have a couple of observations.

Dana Ford has been an outstanding recruiter wherever he's worked. It's possible his departure will affect Muller's recruiting. Maybe not. Time will tell.

If Muller mkes it to the NCAA's, does he leave at the first opportunity? Time will tell.

Actually, if Muller can continue his level of recruiting, keep control over a group of players who have some issues, and stay at IlSU after achieving some success, I'm all for him. That would make the MVC a better conference.

I'm willing to give him a "new coach" pass for totally underachieving in his first year - if he can show that was an anomaly.
