Newcomer of the Year Discussion

Now that we're in the conference season, let's banty about candidates for NOY.

I realize it's a foolhardy exercise to put forth a WSU player because they are typically ineligible for awards in the eyes of the coaches and media, but I will persist and run 6'5" JUCO transfer Ben Smith out into the fray for the fun of it.

In his first conference game, he scored 16 points in 16 minutes, going 4/5 from three and 5/6 overall. For the season he is averaging roughly 6 points and 2 rebounds in 13 minutes per game, shooting 50% from the field and 70% from the line. I suspect it will tough for him to get enough minutes to put up big numbers, however, so his candidacy is handicapped from the get-go.

Seems like he and Ragland are starting to settle into solid roles for WSU

I thought it was obvious that the only question about NoY was whether it was going to Echinique or McDermott.

How dare you suggest that someone else might be considered? Don't you know that NoY was decided before the season even started?

WSU's Ben Smith comes off the bench to score 12 points against Drake, in only 20 minutes of playing time.

Who else is out there in the All-Newcomer discussion?

McD and Rice (shoe ins for all freshman) have been the best so far. We've all heard about Gregg E of CU, and he is a solid candidate. WSU is putting up Smith with a little pub to Ragland as well. Harris has the EU nod of approval...Who else is out there?

Seck at SIU, Wilkins and Cousin at Ill St, Alexander at Drake, Walker from In St? Also potentially freshman Lemon and Odum. I don't see anyone from UNI or MSU.

I see two freshman headlining the All-Newcommers and Seck and Harris likely to make it as well. The fifth position will be won over the second half of the season.

I was very impressed with Seck last night.

McDermott and Echenique also played very well too.
