Were Baker and Van Vleet preseason All-Americans coming into the program?

COY can go either way but it's dumb to penalize coaches who get more talent on their teams.

Similarly it is dumb to penalize a coach because he has more experienced players on his roster. Especially when the experienced players on the other coaches roster have been to a Final Four and are All-Americans coming into the year.

My only point was to rlh who was saying Jacobson wasn't doing as good a coaching job as Marshall because his team was more experienced. Both are great, and I actually think Marshall is a better coach, but devaluing what Jacobson has done due to experienced players is dumb.

My vote is winner-take-all. No green ribbons. Both are clearly good/great coaches. No one else in the league should even be in the running. Just give it to the league champion and move on.

So the coach who in the last two years went to a Final Four, and then went 35-1 is at a disadvantage to a coach whose team was 16-15 last year and 18-14 the year before? So the coach who returns an All-American and had two players as pre-season All-Americans is at the disadvantage?

If WSU wins the conference I would give Marshall the COY, but to say he is disadvantaged to Jacobson because our roster has more upperclassmen is a little misleading.

So Coach of the Year should be graded on a curve, with the advantage going to a coach who performed poorly the previous year?

Jacobson's coaching job isn't more impressive because he did a bad job last year. Marshall's coaching performance isn't worse because he did a good job last year. Neither coach was at a disadvantage last year, and both coaches were responsible for the play on the court and every player on that roster. You don't get to argue last year's record makes this year's record a better coaching job, unless you're going to argue that last year's record is because Jacobson was a bad coach last year. Jacobson didn't suddenly become a bad coach last year, and didn't suddenly become an amazing coach this year. He's a consistently good coach.

Judging COY relative to last year is absurd, unless the coach wasn't responsible for last year. By all means, bring a new coach in at Bradley, win 20 games next year, and give that man COY. You don't get to judge COY relative to your own suboptimal performance in a previous year, though.
