Go ahead and give Tuttle PoY and let Marshall and the players use it as motivation, which they surely will. I have no problem with Tuttle winning but I think it should be FVV.

I think Fred is a fantastic player. That's not in question. He's easily one of the Top 2 guards in the entire league. I just think his teammate is better. This award is between Baker (the best guard) and Tuttle (the best forward), with Fred not too far off. For me FVV was better last year than he was this year. The stats also show this. His rebounds are up but other than that Fred has "dipped" at bit in a statistical sense. Obviously there is more to the story than just stats but I think it's still a fair point.

Tuttle is shooting 63% on the season, he's leading UNI in just about every meaningful category and he's helped lead UNI back to NCAA tournament and will likely find himself with some All-American honors at the end of the year. We have some very talented and deserving young men in this league, and yes I'm biased, but whether you see this award as "most valuable to his team" or who had the "best" season I think Tuttle wins it, despite the Shox winning the regular season title.

While I agree with the premise of your post, Fred stayed the same or got better in every statistical category this year expect shooting percentage. In MVC play he went up in every single category this year.

All 3 players had great seasons. All 3 are winners, have great stats, and are deserving. I just think Tuttle dominated his position more so than the other 2. In fact I'm not sure I can remember a post player as dominant as Tuttle has been the last year? At least not in the last decade. He's consistently made the other Valley 5's look like high school players in head to head matchups. That's why I think he deserves POY.

And his team won. I'm curious who else is in the "top 2 guards in the league" unless it's Baker.

I think Tuttle WILL win. I don't think he should. This league belongs to VanVleet. Fred shouldn't be punished because he has Baker.

I'm fine with Tuttle winning player of the year. While the PoY trophy isn't the same as an MVP award, I think Tuttle without a doubt meant the most to his team. As I remarked after the game @UNI Tuttle led their offense, defense, and special teams. I think Baker and Van Vleet are great players that had great seasons, and in most seasons I think one of them would have won. But most seasons the #2 team finishes with a record worse than 16-2.

Not only did all three play at the top of their positions in the Valley, I think an honest case can be made that each should be an All-American. But again, I have to credit Tuttle for doing everything for UNI. Not only was his individual play excellent, it enabled UNI's style of play by opening up all of their shooters.

Punished? Playing alongside a great player only makes it easier. Easier to win, rack up stats, etc.

He won the award last year despite Baker having a great season.

Yes, I said it was Baker. Tuttle's team also won. UNI may not have the regular season title, but we just wrapped up one of the best title races in MVC history. This isn't a one-sided affair like last year, we still aren't even sure which team is "better". We just know that they are both very good and led by some very talented players. No matter what happens we are going to have several players who get "snubbed". Any of the 3 can easily claim they had a great season.

Actually, it was proven who was better over the course of an 18-game season. WSU beat everybody other than UNI (once). UNI beat everybody other than WSU and Evansville. (once) That's how things are judged. Otherwise, how else would you decide?

I don't how anybody can adamantly say one player IS the POY over another unless they are a homer, which is understandable. Any of the Big 3 deserve it and would be worthy of winning it. Typically, the victor goes the spoils, as it has for most of the last several years, unless there was CLEAR separation between the players. That isn't the case here.

Head to head, usually.
