Triple Doubles?

Postby ShoxNAwe » February 7th, 2015, 11:19 pm

What's the history on this accomplishment league-wide?

Point guards aren’t supposed to care much about any statistic other than wins. Maybe assists.

So Wichita State guard Fred VanVleet understandably tried to play it cool when talking about his pursuit of the points, assists and rebounds needed to compile a prized triple-double. He got them — 10 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists — to become the first Shocker since 1972 to hit that rare trifecta of double-digit stats in three categories.

He just didn’t want people to think he went hunting for them at the expense of his reputation as a pass-first point guard.

“I’ve got some smart guys on this team that pay attention to the game, and I’ll just leave it at that,” he said with a big smile. “I’m thankful.”

VanVleet, who didn’t commit a turnover, became the first Shocker to record a triple-double since Terry Benton in 1972. He is the fifth Shocker credited with a triple-double, joining Gene Wiley, Dave Stallworth, Warren Armstrong and Benton. He ended the first half with five points, eight rebounds and eight assists. He got the needed rebounds and assists early in the second half before scoring five straight points. His three-pointer with 13:51 to play made it 55-17 and he took a seat for the rest of the night soon after.

Not sure about league history but last person to do it was Jake Odum when Indiana State played in the Old Spice Tournament.

Bradley has just 2 known triple doubles:

For a long time it was believed the only one achieved was by Cal Criddle in a 1970 game against St. Louis with 12 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists.

However, last summer SID Bobby Parker happened upon another one featuring Joe Allen, who had 25 points, 12 assists, and 11 rebounds in a 1966 game against Oklahoma.

However, both games occurred during the period of 1952-1983 when the NCAA did not officially recognize the assist as a statistic.

The most recent triple-double (one of two in the D1 era) was Troy Taylor against CU, in Omaha. December 30, 2012. In a bigtime CU win. :buddies:

That kid was the best 6-0 rebounder I've ever seen.

If Troy is 6'0" then I'm Hakim Olajuwon. But yeah UE could have used that skill yesterday, and a few other times through the season.
