What's the history on this accomplishment league-wide?
Point guards aren’t supposed to care much about any statistic other than wins. Maybe assists.
So Wichita State guard Fred VanVleet understandably tried to play it cool when talking about his pursuit of the points, assists and rebounds needed to compile a prized triple-double. He got them — 10 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists — to become the first Shocker since 1972 to hit that rare trifecta of double-digit stats in three categories.
He just didn’t want people to think he went hunting for them at the expense of his reputation as a pass-first point guard.
“I’ve got some smart guys on this team that pay attention to the game, and I’ll just leave it at that,” he said with a big smile. “I’m thankful.”
VanVleet, who didn’t commit a turnover, became the first Shocker to record a triple-double since Terry Benton in 1972. He is the fifth Shocker credited with a triple-double, joining Gene Wiley, Dave Stallworth, Warren Armstrong and Benton. He ended the first half with five points, eight rebounds and eight assists. He got the needed rebounds and assists early in the second half before scoring five straight points. His three-pointer with 13:51 to play made it 55-17 and he took a seat for the rest of the night soon after.
