Bradley at Creighton on Wednesday

Postby Turner » January 19th, 2011, 10:15 am

Creighton has been struggling of late so hopefully this won't be the game that the Braves break their losing streak. I'll take CU, but closer than you might think.

I like the Braves losing, but would not be mad if they broke the streak tonight.

CU wins this one by ten or so. I assume a slow start, probably down a few at the 12 or 13 minute mark, and then pull out to a 6-8 point half time lead. Second half will see a quick bucket or two make it a 10-13 point lead, which will then shrink to 4 or 5 with about 3-5 minutes to go, before CU extends the lead to about 10 by end of game.

Creighton wins 81-68. The most interesting note might be that Kenny Lawson did not start for the first time in 92 games.

Two things of note.

Josh Jones gets the start after not even playing a few games ago. He responds by hitting four of six from three and playing well. Josh was just starting to play well at the end of last year. It has taken him longer than others to catch on to what McDermott wants out of him. If he can turn the corner and give some solid minutes and socre 8-12 a game the rest of the way, CU will be improved. Echinique is becoming more comfortable in beating the double team. Granted, Bradleys bigs aren't as good as some we have faced, but Echinique is going to be a beast to deal with in the second half of the season. 5-7 from the field and more importantly, 7-7 from the charity stripe.

O.k., three things:

Every coach who looks at CU game film and does not come into a game against CU with a plan to spread the floor and drive to the rim time after time after time should be immediately fired. I continue to be amazed at how horrible we are at stopping dribble penetration. Had Bradley done that the entire game, they would have scored 80 points. MSU, WSU and even Drake did that to us time and time again. I know much of that stems from the type of players Altman was recruiting over the last few years. I sure hope McDermott recruits some guys with some ability to move laterally.

o.k., four things: McDermott with another double-double.

Its so hard to tell because alot of the production comes when Bradley is down 15+ in games but the Braves do seem to have a few guys good at driving the ball to the basket. When you cant shoot and have terrible inside players I guess you have to do something.

If there has been a "bright spot" for Bradley of late it is the play of young guards Dyricus Simms Edwards and Walt Lemon, Jr. Both guys are really athletic and do a nice job getting to the basket. Of course they are flawed when it comes to shooting the ball but there is some hope there.

Jays fans--with the talent on your roster how are you not better?

That's the 64 dollar question! I think (hope) by the first of March this team is really playing well.

You can see signs of it from time to time but it's not there yet. Far from it but we have hope!

Thank God for Greg E. and Little Mac!

Why would a coach continue to do things that are successful?

I picked the Jays to win the conference in the preseason and JJ was one of the reasons why. We had four starters from the end of last year returning in Young, Jones, Wragge, and Lawson. You then add Echinique and McDermott to that group and we've got a pretty tough lineup. However, Wragge has been gone for most of the year with injury and Jones had almost completely disappeared and suddenly you're down to two of those four returning starters being productive. You then throw in the fact that Lawson has fallen as badly as anyone I can remember between their junior and senior seasons and you see why the Jays have struggled.

Last night we finally saw the Jones from the second-half of last season and Lawson was finally a little more productive again too in his new role off the bench and we clicked. Yes Bradley is struggling so winning the game wasn't exactly a surprise or anything to get excited about but we looked really good that first half and I don't think it was solely because of the opposition. It's only one game and maybe Jones and Kenny revert back to their bad form the next game but if not then we're suddenly back to having a pretty solid top 7 or 8 players.
