The natural progression of players can get disrupted if your sophomore/junior classes don't have a path to assuming greater roles on the team as they advance. In recruiting, a player signs last Nov expecting a certain opportunity , then finds his position is not thinning out and he might be sitting longer than he anticipated. On the other hand, we all know that MM programs are most often able to compete with the majors when our programs are older and mature vs the more talented but less experienced majors. Obviously some really unique dynamics to be considered . Also if you bring most everybody back, the assumption that the team will be better doesn't allow for the fact some players might have reached their potential already and so the team doesn't improve because the players still filling the same roles aren't better, just a year older.

You make some great points. I also think it's strange to tell the press that everyone is coming back next year this early on. There is still a lot of season left to be played, players could change their mind depending upon what happens.

Evansville has 3 seniors,1 red shirt senior walk on and 1 grad student. Kuhlman and Frederking have had 4 coaches and 3 different offenses in their 4 years. Ilegeomah saw minimal minutes the 2nd half of last season and has not suited up yet this season. Levitch is on his 3rd college program. Personally I see all 5 guys moving on and not taking advantage of the extra season. The Aces signed 2 guards and a stretch 4 last fall and have another spot open. I believe Coach Lickliter and his staff will be fine if all 5 guys decided not to come back.

It would only hurt the progression of the rebuild if any of those guys come back.

I'm sure the roster will work itself out but Drake has two guys committed for next season. That means at least two guys wont be back (of course it doesn't mean it will be seniors).

Not necessarily the case. Noah Thomas opted out of this year and if he does not come back, that opens up a scholarship. No confirmation that he won't be returning, but that is one scholarship that appears to be up in the air. The other option available is for Tucker Devries to not be on athletic scholarship for a year, and have his way paid in academic scholarships, and/or out of pocket by Coach Devries.

Obviously, this is all speculation at this point and Drake fans are more focused on this year than next, but there is a pretty straightforward path to keeping everyone who has played this year and include the two incoming recruits.

Based on how this worked with my cousin playing football as a walk-on, if he was playing in games, he could not be on an academic scholarship, as that would have to count toward the 95 scholarship limit for football. So it's either he's one of the 13 scholarships they have, or they are paying his full tuition I believe. There is not a way to be on academic scholarship while you are able to play as well.

Correct. Tucker Devries will have to be on an athletic scholarship as one of the 13 for the men's basketball team.

I'm not sure, but I thought I read somewhere that any seniors that come back next season won't count against their team's scholarship limit.

Correct. I was wrong on that.

Interesting. That is news to me that if the player is paying his own way, he can't get any academic scholarships. I appreciate the insight!
