The natural progression of players can get disrupted if your sophomore/junior classes don't have a path to assuming greater roles on the team as they advance. In recruiting, a player signs last Nov expecting a certain opportunity , then finds his position is not thinning out and he might be sitting longer than he anticipated. On the other hand, we all know that MM programs are most often able to compete with the majors when our programs are older and mature vs the more talented but less experienced majors. Obviously some really unique dynamics to be considered . Also if you bring most everybody back, the assumption that the team will be better doesn't allow for the fact some players might have reached their potential already and so the team doesn't improve because the players still filling the same roles aren't better, just a year older.
You make some great points. I also think it's strange to tell the press that everyone is coming back next year this early on. There is still a lot of season left to be played, players could change their mind depending upon what happens.
