Seriously, though, there's always a chance that things can click for him, and if they do, he has the size to always get interest from the NBA. But on a year to year basis, EO showed essentially zero improvement at WSU on the offensive front.

That's not true at all. He showed quite a bit of improvement on the offensive end. It was by no means polished, but he was a different player than when he first got here. Had he been somewhere that didn't have the frontcourt depth that we had, he most likely would have progressed even more. That's why I believe that some time in Europe where it'll be nothing but basketball for him and he'll get more court time could work wonders for the young man.

In what way did EO improve?

Over three years, his FG% didn't show much of an improvement: 41.7%, 50%, 47%. I guess that's an improvement from the first season, but he only made 5 baskets that year.

I guess you could argue that his points/game increased, but so did his minutes. His points per minute played: .19, .16, .17.

His FT% plummeted to 39% last year.

The ratio of turnovers to points scored is pretty incredible.

He really couldn't even catch most passes made to him in the paint.

You can show statistical offensive improvement for nearly every player that's ever played at WSU under Marshall ... except EO. His stats never really improved. Every time he got in the game I just prayed they wouldn't pass the ball to him. He developed a little skyhook, I guess, but ... who cares? Didn't make any statistical difference.

So if that's not true at all and he showed "quite a bit of improvement on the offensive end," where is that improvement? Just a gut feeling?

I love that he knows this is a Big Time basketball program. The financial compensation just backs it all up.

I'd be curious to see where this will now rank Marshall in coaching salaries.
USA Today Coaches Top 25 Poll Conference Breakdown:

MVC: 1
WCC: 1
Atlantic Ten: 1
MWC: 1
Big East: 1

The Big East is Big Time.

According to the USA Today Database, he'd rank in at #23 nationally. #22 California pays Mike Montgomery $1,756,500, and #23 Missouri pays Frank Haith $1,650,000.

That's about what I expected. More importantly, though, it mentions a raise on the assistant salary pool to $501k. Anyone know what it was before this?

Marshall's contract is finally done.

Gregg is getting $1.6M as his base salary from the University. That bumps to $1.75 M at the end of this basketball season. He's getting $501,000 for his assistants and the DoBo.

Marshall was offered $2.6M to go to UCLA. Compare housing costs, commute times and distances, etc. and $1.6M in Wichita is probably more than $2.6 in LA.

$1.75M in Wichita is about equivalent to $2.5M in Los Angeles.

Which is about what it should be. We don't need to out-bid UCLA. We just need to be able to offer similar money so we're not getting significantly out-bid. Hell of a lot better job security in Wichita, as well.

And that's the key. Sometimes its not the 'name' of the school or conference that is the pull. If the money is decent, the quality of life factors-including support for assistant coaches, accommodations for team travel and recruiting, comfort level in your job position and ability to have success, etc. etc. take over in drawing and keeping a coach.

I don't know what the 'cost of living' comparisons are between LA and Wichita or even Cedar Falls, but I know that I could live very, very comfortably on what Ben Jacobson makes in the Cedar Valley.

Quality of life in Wichita is a whole lot better than LA. Congratulations WSU fans. It would seem the school has given Marshall no reason to leave.

I'd be curious to see how many MVC coaches it takes to equal Marshall's salary.
