I’m guessing even with the portal the MVC will continue to be in the 9-12 range among D1 MBB conferences. Same place it has always been for the most part. In the big picture nothing will change.

That’s just not true. LaRavia spent his entire career at Indiana State telling everyone who would listen that he’d only be at ISU for two years, then he’d go somewhere bigger. That wasn’t precipitated by the coaching change.

But props to him for making his plan work.

Looking at the portal as a way of building a roster, at some point it's not unlike asking a woman who has been married 5 times if she'd like to share her life with you.
The players who come into a program and decide to stay, get their degree because they like the school, the coaches, their teammates, the campus, the women/men, attitudes of the community, those will be the players the fans are attracted to and it will be what they expect of the programs they support.
If this becomes a YMCA of transfers, the programs will eventually pay for that. Players who jump from school to school aren't the sort of players I'd invest much time recruiting as a standard strategy. I can think of some exceptions when it gets into post-season chances. Odds are, it that player is that good, well ... recruit away. He's already signed a contract.
NIL and the portal are exploiting the players and the coaches at the moment because the rules keep changing depending on who's on the soapbox. All-Star teams should just strap on a Nike jersey and stop pretending they represent my alma mater.

This issue arose because colleges, coaches, administrators and all the “decision makers” fought for years and years and years against making players employees and/or four year scholarships and contracts.

I can’t stand hearing coaches bitch about this stuff.

It occurs to me, depending on definition, that if you have a group of athletes who are essentially signed by a NIL cooperative to participate as a team, then that group of athletes represents the NIL cooperative. The only way that is legitimately attached to the university's logo/image/reputation would be through a contract that the NIL cooperative signs with the university.
In a phrase, the Indiana University Hoosiers basketball team is not the same thing as the IU-sponsored NIL All-Star team. If they want the right to be called that, then they gotta talk turkey.
Of course, the puffed up boosters won't see it that way. Braggin' rights come with front-row seats at the Grand Event.
I don't see any P-5 programs endorsing this conversation and the wannabe mid-majors don't have the clout or the courage. To say, "You want to represent our school, use its fieldhouse or any facilities we rent or maintain, and our TV streaming/radio rights? Yeah, then pay us!" ... eventually, these NIL cooperatives (or another term, collective) will need to come to Hay-Soos about who they are.
The flip of this is that universities generally get extra money when their sports teams make national news. They might be more than satisfied to let somebody else do the legwork for them.
There is really no need now to give out scholarships to top athletes. The rest of them can go to a D-3 program and get the same education.

Can't totally vouch for these figures as no source was noted, but a coach on twitter tweeted the following about the portal :

1] Only 1 in 12 players entering the portal transfer up; the rest are either lateral moves , transfers down , or :

2] 47% of those entering the portal never play basketball at the college level again [ this one I think is high, but I know the # is pretty significant

3] A player that transfer once has a 15% greater likelihood of not getting a degree, and it increases with each transfer

Again no source and I'm not saying these are totally accurate, but even so, they paint a different picture of the portal than many think. Would really like to see an official study and results ,

I don't know about the 47% number, but there was a 40%ish number in a report several months ago that stated around 40% of FBS transfers lost their aid altogether on the football side. (But the aid word is key here, too. Just because one loses aid does not mean their career ends.)

But I also think data from the last 2 years is likely to be skewed in part by COVID-related recruitment. IOW, there was less direct eye observation, which probably caused some guys to be over-recruited and other guys to be under-recruited. I believe there are more DII to DI transfers the last couple years, as well. That used to be a fairly rare thing (like 10 in 5 years), but it seems like there have been dozens recently.

I have no doubt that the numbers in spite of that will still be high (and probably still around 30% or maybe more).

who is still available? anyone have a website to see players still in the portal? NCAA starting in a few months and big school have teams already set so could help small teams bulk out their programs.
