Weighin in on FOY:
McD. 4th in league in pts per game
4th in league in rebounds per game
6th in league in FG%
15th in FT%
4th in offensive RB
5th in defensive RB
Rice 5th in pts per game
4th in steals per game
12th in 3pts per game
12th in blocked shots
13th in offensive RB
Odum 3rd in asssists per game
1st in steals
2nd in assists/TO margin
Odum of course is asked to do different things than McDermott and Rice. Being a fan of a school that has seen three different point guards play four years (Sears, McKinney, Dotzler - with Young nearly a four year starter at point), I appreciate how difficult it is to ask a freshman step in and run the point. However, when you have a freshman leading his team in scoring and rebounding and being the only player in the league in the top 5 in the league in both scoring and rebounding, it is hard for me to fathom a logical argument to put any other player ahead of McDermott. At the half-way point, I have to go with McDermott.
Ultimately, it will probably come down to how the teams finish the season. If ISU-B finishes first or second and Odum maintains solid point guard play, he will garner a lot of votes. If CU can hold its own in the top half of the league, I think he wins. Rice is solid, but if CU stays in the top half of the league and McDermott stays around the top 5 in scoring and rebounding, I think the voters will tilt toward McDermott.
