Halfway point

We are at the halfway point of the conference season. Tell us what you think of your performance so far.

For UE, we are 4-5 and outside of any Evansville fans there probably wasn't one person that thought we would have 4 wins at this point. I feel we can win every game left on our schedule except one. I don't see us winning at creighton. But every other game(@ISUb, @BU, @DU, SIU, UNI, WSU, MSU) I believe we at least have a shot. We will win all of them, no. But winning 5 would be something. Even 8-10, woul be an improvement and a much higher finish then expected. We need to protect our home court. I still think we will avoid the play-in game.

Drake 3-6, and have been blown out in 5 of the 6 losses. Phelps' teams have traditionally fared much poorer the second time through the league than the first, due to his teams being very, very easy to scout and prepare for. Drake also had the easier portion of their schedule in the first 9. I'm predicting a 4-14 finish for the Bulldogs, and a lot more empty seats than usual.

I feel pretty good about the Bears with only one conference loss. Especially since we should have an asterisk next to that one since the Trees were effectively gifted it. When you consider the fact that we had a similar thing happen in Knoxville we should only have one loss overall. We've the best coach in this league, the best player in Weems and the best homecourt advantage.Wichita might have higher attendance but most of their fans are 65+ so they don't really contribute anything to the atmosphere except excessive prune juice consumption. We should win this thing with good fortune and fair officiating. We'll see.

I completely agree with the post above, all the close games MSU won were due to nothing but skill and coaching. All the close games MSU lost is due to bad calls and lucky breaks, including Tulsa and OSU. I've got them undefeated in my book.

Between this post and the recent posts related to WSU/INDST and CU/MSU games I Just giggle. Lots of well they played bad or missed this easy shot or bad call. From all the fan bases.

Bad calls, missed free throws, bad bounces are part of every game. Not sure how some of you enjoy watching your team play. As it appears your entire self worth/esteem is based on what team you are a fan of does on the court. Must suck...

Again, please do not lump all MSU fans in the same category with the above. Thanks

From what I've gathered:

Drake fans are delirious, angry and Phelps should be put in a protective program.

LOL. Drake fans are angry and disgusted, but not delirous.

What are your thoughts/predictions about the season so far, and the prospects for DU in the 2nd half of the MVC season?

I was only kidding with the "delirious" part, of course. Hysterical would be more accurate. DrakeNation is unhappy and rightfully so.

My thoughts?

I'm up in Minnesota, so I listen to Dolph and Larry or catch the rare cluster on channelsurfing.net, so obviously, I don't have the best vantage point. From what I can gather though, the offense is stagnant beyond belief, we lack toughness and passion, and the team struggles to keep things competitive. All I can ask is that the young gentleman on the team work hard, don't give up and build towards a successful future. In reality, with a season going so horribly wrong, with such a disenchanted fan base and a coach visibly sitting on the hot seat, I think it may only get worse.

I think you pretty much nailed it. I was watching the ballgame last night with a couple of other hardcore fans (and regulars on Drakenation), and we were talking about the lack of toughness and intensity. A team is typically a reflection of their coach. A tough hard-nosed coach usually has a tough, hard-nosed team. Not sure what that says about Phelps.

Can I ditto that for ISU blue fans?
A few things...
1. Defense-Our defense has been absolutely spectacular. That is something that seems to come every night.
2. Rebounding- For a football analogy we seem to gang rebound, lots of rebounds from our guards and forwards.
3. Offense- this is our weak point and by that I mean our offense just needs to become more of a second nature thing.
4. Intangibles- This team simply doesnt quit, seriously, just wont quit. I love watching them play that old school hard-nosed style.
