It should always be noted that Grand Canyon is a for-profit concern, like Trump University, DeVry, and the Cosmetology and Car Repair College down the street. There will not be money spent on academic research unless it has an ROI that passes muster from the accountants that disseminate the money received from their New York Stock Exchange funding. (Here is their latest stock price. Right now, they have a market cap of $3.7 billion. They might be able to buy buy every school in the league.)
Some people might be comfortable with that. But I think the independent, non-profit status of our higher education model, coupled with a crosshatch of state-financed schools, is what has made American higher education the greatest higher education system in world history-- more accessible than the German Universities that declined under Hitler's sociological and ideological purges, more practical and less class dependent than Oxford and Cambridge, and more vital and widespread than the higher education in the Roman Empire or Middle Ages.
But if you think that the 240-year experiment of American Democracy should be sold off and replaced with "running the country like a business!!", then we're already mostly to a for-profit system of higher education, as well. Let's get the Fire Departments and Police Departments and Health Departments and Coroners and the Centers for Disease Control and the EPA set up on a for-profit model, too.
