The Summit was just repped with a 16 seed. They've had programs leave for the Southland and WAC. Their conference champ's head coach called a player's meeting to announce he was leaving for the MVC's worst program. He changed his mind at this meeting, but it doesn't reach that point if two leagues are level.

I like the Summit and the above is obviously cherrypicking their lows, but c'mon. Compare the highs and lows of the 19 programs and conferences as a whole and anyone objective will put their money on MVC programs. MVC is better up top and more reliable depth.

That said, only 3 MVC programs (UNI/ISUr/Valpo) would be top dog in the Summit. NDSU/SDSU/ORU would be top half MVC teams the vast majority of seasons.

If we go to 12 then I think we should either add Murray State and Oral Roberts; or we should add NDSU and SDSU. Anything other than either of those two combos would be a mistake in my opinion.

What if Elgin has to look on as his conference champion plays in the 16/16 play-in at Dayton?

That is where this league is heading.

That's not even close to true.

Having watched this conference change over the last 40+ years, this thread is hilarious. The MVC isn't headed for any 16/16 games. I would say, if history is any judge, that it is more likely that the MVC is looking at multiple invites in the future. The game has changed a lot, and mid-majors as a whole are fighting for a dwindling number of at-large bids, which makes multiple bids far less likely even with WSU in the fold. But to say that they MVC is heading for the trash heap of college basketball is just funny.

Some of you really deal better with extremes than with more realistic probabilities. Losing WSU sucks - BIG TIME - but it's not the death knell. The good Lord knows I've been really upset at the prospect of losing the Shockers, but we've been through this before...everyone just breathe...

Adding three quality programs (including Valpo in this) can, in aggregate, make up for the loss of one powerhouse. We'll get back. It'll just take a couple of years...

You never know.

Let's say an upset happens in the conference tournament and a sub .500 team makes the NCAA.

Also, had a sub-.500 MVC team won the tournament in previous years with Wichita and Crayton in the league, they would have been a 16-seed too. This isn't a new situation.

In fact, any sub .500 team in any mid major conference is going to be a 16 seed.

As for how the MVC is objectively better than the Summit League?

-History
-Budgets
-Recuits
-Coaches Salaries
-TV deal
-Facilities
-NCAA Tournament succes, both recent and historical (and you cant just say UNI doesn't count)
-The conference that we pick our replacement schools from gets their replacement schools from the Summit League

Half the Summit League (3 soon to be 4 Dakotas and Omaha) was D2 in the last 15 years, some sooner. WIU is closer to closing than being competitive. The Indiana schools aren't even real schools....just satilites of two other schools and they both play at least some of their home games in high school caliber gyms. Denver is a hockey and lacrosse school. Omaha is a hockey school too...and their new arena Is hemorraging cash. ORU has some history and spends a little money but they finished last last year. The Dakotas do OK but they're also pretty new to DI.

This has nothing to do with the discussion other than a fun fact. Indiana high school gyms are better or comparable to most college gyms on the east coast. The largest 15 high school gyms in the country from Wikipedia are:

The top fifteen in total seating capacity are as follows:
State City Venue Capacity
1 Indiana New Castle New Castle Fieldhouse 9,325[1]
2 Indiana East Chicago John A. Baratto Athletic Center 8,296[1]
3 Indiana Seymour Lloyd E. Scott Gymnasium 8,110[1]
4 Indiana Richmond Tiernan Center 8,100[3]
5 Indiana Muncie Muncie Fieldhouse 7,635 [4]
6 Indiana Marion Bill Green Athletic Arena 7,560 [5]
7 Texas Dallas Alfred J. Loos Fieldhouse 7,500[1]
8 Indiana Elkhart North Side Gymnasium 7,373[1]
9 Indiana Michigan City "The Wolves' Den" Gym 7,304[1]
10 Indiana Gary West Side High School Gym 7,217[1]
11 Indiana Lafayette Jefferson High School Gym 7,200[6]
12 Indiana Southport Southport High School Gym 7,124[6]
13 Indiana Washington "The Hatchet House" 7,090[7]
14 Indiana Columbus Memorial Gymnasium 7,071[6]

So an absolute doomsday disaster that has never even come close to happening.
