What big man would want to play in the MVC?

After watching the CU-UNI game last night, I am as frustrated as I have ever been with MVC officiating in the post. The number of ticky-tack fouls and offensive fouls agianst players battling for position is ridiculous. It isn't just because they called fouls on Echinique last night, but is a continuing pattern of such fouls. This is the third or fourth time referees have completely taken Echinique out of the game with ticky tack offensive fouls. I have seen it in other MVC games as well.

What kind of big man would want come play in the Valley after watching the way they are calling post play? How would you expect MVC teams to get quality big men with the size and power to hang with BCS conference bigs? If I were Gregory, I would seriously look at opportunities at another conference to finish my career (fortunately, having already used his redshirt such an option probably isn't a great opportunity at this point). Granted, it fits someone like Kenny Lawson to a T, since he doesn't like to get pushed around. But, that isn't the kind of post play that will allow MVC teams to match up against BCS conference schools on a consistent basis.

Erik Crawford is too rough. Ramon Clemente hacks. Faulker shoves every play. Eglseder couldnt possibly play defense without fouling. Odiakosa is too mean.

But that was all ok before CU had a big guy? Gimme a break. Echineque isnt the first big guy in the league.

I completely agree with the situation with the refs. But, I will say that when we played at Oklahoma State, I went to the game, and it may have been one of the most ticky tack called games that we have played all year. I commented several times during the game about how I was surprised by it....I figured it would be a very physical game, but the refs kept that from happening, and it was a very tightly called game. The difference was that it was pretty consistent....the games in the Valley are just all over the map. Huge hack no call on one end then a non contact rebound foul on the other end, it is getting rediculous.

No it's a good point and I've felt the same way with Teague. UNI flopping last night was pathetic.

First of all can we put an end to the MVC refs? As has been mentioned 1000 times before, there is no such thing.

If you think about it, I think it has more to do with the size of the typical MVC players. Guys like Teague and Echinique are not the typical MVC sized player. Echinique lost 30 pounds to get to 240. Lawson and Stutz are more typical. In fact Chad Millard played the 5 for Creighton some last year. He worked hard to get up to the 220 range. Its harder to pull off a flop on a Stutz than it is on a Teague. On the other side how the hell does Evansville guard Echinique if he gets the ball inside? If he catches it inside game over. Thus they flop and get away with it. Have you ever heard Shaq talking about how he used to get hacked in the NBA? Same thing. If you are a Shaq fan its unfair. If you are not, ha ha.

To sign a guy like Echinique, have high hopes for your team because of having him, and have him become useless at times due to the way a ref calls a game sucks. You have to admit he is a difference maker but there is a target on his back.

Did anyone watch the BYU-SDS game after the Creighton game last night? That game was easily 30 times more physical than the CU-UNI game. Refs let em play. Which game would you rather watch? Which game would you rather play in?

What do you tell Teague or Echinique?

Don't forget about UE's Matt Webster. People said he was too rough, a dirty player, etc just because he used his 6'8" 255lb frame the way a post player is supposed to.

Here's what I don't get in the MVC. Players LIKE Echinique and Teague lower their shoulder and drive defenders back. Not just in UNI games, but in general. You can see the defender stand their ground, but the big guys push them back 6 inches at at time. But if the defender does anything to fight the push, it's a foul.

To me, slamming into a defender with your shoulder is just as much of a foul as them trying to counteract it. Let them play or call the offensive foul as well.
