Simmons Speaks

Evansville legend and 11 year coach Marty Simmons has gone silent since his dismissal.

Until now. Marty and Angie are throwing a party on twitter.

It's clear the Simmons' were instrumental in getting Dru to transfer. Looking at that twitter history, there were numerous Pro-Mizzou posts that had nothing to do with Dru..and all started after Marty was fired.

This really disappoints me. While I was very vocal in my desire for a change in the program, I always defended Marty as a stand up guy, with great character. Sadly, that is no longer the case.

All the more reason this move was long overdue, and the renewed enthusiasm from the school, admins, and community is amazing.

Really sounds like the reaction from a person who thought he had a lifetime job.

#GoCats is the most common cheer at Northwestern games and what Fitzgerald ends every interview/presser with. Sounds like the Simmons’ have publicly declared their 2 new favorite teams.

How does any of this make him less of a stand up guy? He recruited Smith and Taylor. He had good relationships with them. He wants them to do well. Good grief. Seems like an odd thing to be upset about.

You fire the coach you have to deal with the consequences that come with it. One of those is that the fired coach may not be super excited about the program that just fired him.

I don't expect him to be super excited about the program, or be sitting in the front row next year, but I also don't expect him to be publicly cheering guys leaving.

What about the ones that he recruited who have elected to stay. Does he not want them to "do well"? Where were all of these tweets when they announced they were staying? Would he be this ecstatic if Dru and Ryan were "doing well" while he was still the coach? Of course not.

He can handle it how he feels. His PR skills have never been very good..but at the end of the day, he should realize the school that he and his wife both attended, that at least 2 of his kids were given full rides from, gave him an opportunity he was frankly not qualified for, with a much longer leash than just about anyone in collegiate sports. A simple thanks for the opportunity and best wishes for the program going forward would do wonders, even if it isn't heartfelt. If he can't bring himself to that, he shouldn't come out of hiding to shake his pom-poms when the two best players on the team announce they are going elsewhere.

Question is why do you care what he says? It's not like anything he says is hurting the program.

I really don't care what he says. My original point was that it appears that he and his wife were actively encouraging Dru to Mizzou. I never said I cared what he says, rather that it tarnishes this perception that he is such a stand up and ethical guy. It's not like he has a vested interest in Mizzou. He isn't employed there. The only motive to do such a thing is to attempt to inflict damage on the program. Sorry, IMO, that is bush.

No, he can't hurt it. Even with Dru and Taylor gone, the program is light years ahead of where it was just two months ago.

He should have gone to Mizzou. It was the smart choice and Simmons knew it. New coach, no chance of NCAA tournament in next couple of years, Taylor left.

Let's be honest. You have no idea where the program is. You can hope its light years ahead but there is no evidence that is the case. Walter McCarthy has never coached an NCAA game.
