Follow the money

An interesting look at revenues and expenditures of college basketball programs.

It is a bit skewed for location (i.e. cost of living etc.)

No surprises where we sit really, but very interesting to compare the MVC against other leagues.

Last year Jason Svoboda of Sycamorepride compiled a list from 2015. I don't know if this list of 2016 is comparing apples to apples with Jason's list. Some large swings that look suspicious.
Net Change from 2015 to 2016 for the MVC schools:
Bradley +$229,000
UNI -$44,000
UE -$277,000
Loyola +$77,000
Drake +$462,000
ISUR -$142,000
SIU -$148,000
MSU -$227,000
ISUB +$34,000
VU not a member in 2015

I would attribute the reduction in UE's spending to the CIT tournament that year.

Hate seeing these as a Bradley fan because it illustrates how bad our ROI has been of late. Hopefully that changes soon.

Also, 4 of the top 5 budgets are private schools, and this despite the fact the publics milk their large student bodies for athletic fees. Maybe those aren't included though.

Missouri Valley
Team Expenses Revenue
Bradley $3,359,417 $3,359,417
Drake $2,933,596 $2,696,721
Northern Iowa $2,856,369 $2,856,369
LUC $2,821,576 $2,821,576
Evansville $2,622,979 $2,622,979
Missouri State $2,506,636 $2,506,636
Valparaiso $2,397,794 $2,504,241
Illinois State $2,311,466 $2,311,466
Southern Illinois $2,093,251 $2,093,251
Indiana State $1,866,603 $1,884,192
Average: $2,576,969 $2,565,685

That's all just budgeting voodoo and pretty worthless. You gotta know when you see 7 schools with exactly balanced revenue and expenses, that ain't real. It's just the way they chose to report the money flow.

Private schools are going to look like they spend more simply because tuition is much, much higher. Throw in that Bradley and Evansville also rent their arenas and they aren't spending quite as much on true basketball related expenses.

UNI leads the league in true basketball spending by a decent margin. This isn't lost on the fan base and as much as Jake is pretty much universally loved in Cedar Falls, the results HAVE to get better and get better fast.

Are they really spending more on basketball [ie. recruiting, facilities, etc.] or they just spending more on Jake?

Doesn't a lot of Jake's salary come from private donations though? If so would that even be counted in the numbers?

Jake's salary is 100% privately funded. I think it does count in that number though. I also know that with Wichita gone, UNI has the largest assistant's salary pool. The differences are in coaching salary and travel. We charter flights everywhere except Drake (obviously) and Bradley or Illinois State if we play them on a weekend.
