Brings to mind a game back in the Rick Johnson era. I no longer remember the foe, but it was an MVC game. CU was one of the worst teams in the country and the opponent that night was not many rungs above that. Game was tied something like 44 all at the end of regulation. Exiting game, you might think. But you'd be wrong. It was the most boring game I have ever attended. Roughly one-third of the 2,000 or so fans in attendance headed for the door after the end of regulation. They had had enough. Fans steadily left during the overtime period, even though the game stayed close. When there was a time out with about 20 seconds to go, Creighton down two with the basketball, a full half of the remaining crowd got up and headed for the exit. I guaranty you out of the remaining few hundred folks most if not all were hoping CU would miss the final shot (which we did). It would have surprised me if more than 100 would have stuck around to watch a second overtime. That game had to set the bar for the worst basketball game ever played, and no one could stomach watching another five minutes of it.
Since he probably hasn't seen a close game in Omaha, let me enlighten him. Tie game, up 2, down 2, up 20, down 20, when the horn goes off for the under four minute time out at the Q, hundreds of CU fans have the same Pavlovian response - jump up, grab their coat and head for the exits. With each successive time-out, dozens more head for the exits - no matter what the score.
