There's a long shot idea brought up on our board. Since the MVC schools and/or conferences' head brass don't want Murray, I say we start our own conference. We did it once, we could do it again. First off, let's face facts here. The OVC is never going improve. I've been attending Racer games since I'm 10 years old when Martin and Mann were running the show and every year, the league seems to get worse. Schools like UTM, SIUE, Tennessee Tech, TSU...they don't give a damn about improving the league. Another fact is that a lot of schools, especially at our level, are having financial issues and would love to cut costs. Here's the league I propose:

Murray
Belmont
Lipscomb
Northern KY
SIUC
Evansville
APSU
EKU
Morehead
SEMO

This would be a highly competitive league and one that would rank far better than the current OVC and probably rival the MVC. The travel cost savings would be extraordinary. Possibly a multi bid league yearly. Of course, this is all a pipe dream, but it never hurts to dream.

As do 99% of all message board posts, but hey, opinions vary. I do know first hand that SIU-C sure could stand to save a few bucks since little brother passed them in enrollment.

I was mentioning a fantasy, new conference a few posts ago. My first choice would obviously be Murray going MVC, but it's probably not happening without a partner. That said, my theory anyway, is that Belmont is waiting for us to leave so the OVC can add Lipscomb. Belmont wants rid of us and we want rid of the entire conference. Therefore, it would have to be NKU paired with Murray to the MVC to even the count up.

It would leave them with an odd number. Now if we could trade out UTM for Lips, then possibly.

So add WIU and a football only like North Alabama or Kennesaw State. At least that's what a forward thinking OVC would do. And then you would make sure that Murray State Belmont Lipscomb Austin Peay and Jacksonville State all play each other twice a year.

Unfortunately, forward thinking is not something they do much of down at headquarters in Brentwood, TN. If it were my call, I would downsize the OVC and drop Tennessee State and UTM.

I honestly wonder (and fear) that adding Lipscomb and some scheduling tweaks would be enough to keep Murray State happy in the OVC.
