If WIU joined the OVC, it would definitely help them with travel costs. More than likely if they added WIU, they'd probably take Lipscomb or North Alabama and go back to divisions. The OVC also uses travel partners for all of their sports and their women's basketball is basically treated as JV (they play right before the men).

My guess is WIU wants to stay in the MVFC as long as they can since football is their most important sport. I have my doubts WIU will ever be D2. People act like they are going to close down, but as long as Chicago St stays open and stays D1 I don't see either happening.

Chicago State has more political pull than WIU and Forgottonia. See their fancy Emil Jones Arena, named after the former Illinois State Senate president.

In addition to St Thomas joining the summit league, today it was announce Denny Sanford, who finances the Summit League, bought an entire university and renamed it after himself. National University is now called Sanford National University. It appears they, along with Augustana University in Sioux Falls, will join the summit league together and bring the league to 12 teams. (With the addition of St Thomas).

Sure wish the MVC would get to 12.

Sounds like a golf course.

Don't go to 12 just to go to 12. If those extra 2 can help get a second bid or earn revenue some way to offset dividing the pie more ways, great, but otherwise no.

The last school we added is already the worst team in the league. God only knows who Elgin would pick next, but I can't imagine it would be any better.

At first the way you wrote this made me say "da heck?"

Then I actually read the story and it's awesome that this is going down: https://www.forbes.com/sites/maxjedeurp ... 6982d29756

I don't see any reference to the Summit League? And how are they going to convince those schools to trek to California?

Sanford purchased a school in San Diego, lol. Healthcare business transaction.

Summit almost certainly holds at 11 after exhausting all desirable, realistic options. They’d be looking at Minnesota State or Minnesota-Duluth for a 12th. Duluth would be interesting as it’s 150 miles from the Twin Cities and big enough to carve its own “niche”. Hockey program has a big following and in the midst of a dynasty. Cool roadtrip with the Northern Lights.

Or they could give a look to the Mules of Central Missouri. Heck, they’ve been supplying P5 head coaches. :P

After Augustana, the footprint’s just out of options with the means or desire for D1.

Pretty sure that bit was a joke. The National University -> Sanford National University thing is correct, but they don't have any athletics.

Also regarding previously mentioned Chicago State possibly coming back to the Summit (it was a comment a while back)...that's not likely to happen unless the Summit is on the verge of disbanding. CSU's sports are HORRIBLE (Their basketball teams (M&W) went a combined 5-56 last year...women’s team has a total of 3 wins over the last 3 years). They were already kicked out of the conference once for bad athletics and worse academics...they're not getting invited back anytime soon. They should go NAIA and join the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference...but they won't.

St. Thomas is a solid addition. I don't think anyone outside of the eastern side of South Dakota is at all excited about the possibility of Augustana (SD)...hopefully that's been put to rest with St. Thomas joining.

AIr Force coach dropped hints before the season and then again this past week about leaving the MWC. Possibly join Navy as a football add to the AAC.
