Lottich recruits as well as Bryce did and Valpo has a nice attraction for foreign players. That alone gives them a high edge over most teams at that level. These are guys who fly under the radar and make a program successful. Whether that's Lottich or the university itself, so long as that intangible pipeline exists, Valpo will challenge for something -- even if it is an NIT home court advantage.
That's not nothing. You can find a lot of "Mister Clean" coaches to take over at Valpo and you will end up with the same thing -- this program attracts good (not great, always) players. Hammick made Peters look good and nobody needed to do that. There are other examples, like Broekoff or the Walkers -- most programs in the Valley would LOVE to have these guys, and the P-5 programs would sign them and sit them on the end of the bench for 4 years.
Valpo is in a nice spot (I live 3 blocks from there, it's a great place to see a game!) and messing with the coach and his staff is not a good strategy. They gave Bryce plenty of chances and it paid off with a trip to MSG. I was disappointed at the way the city ignored that, to be honest.
Replacing Lottich does nothing for the program's prestige.
