2020-21 Starting Five Predictions

Postby usmcsaluki » April 29th, 2020, 6:19 pm

With all the new faces in the Valley - and with all the departures - what's everyone's predictions for their team's starting five this coming season? How good is the Seton Hall transfer for Drake? I assume Kaifes will be starting for Loyola? Who replaces Tulio and Cook for the Bears?

It's still really early, but here's my take on SIU at this point:

Lance Jones, PG, Soph
Ben Harvey, SG, Soph (There are HIGH expectations for this kid who is a transfer from Eastern Illinois)
Marcus Domask, SF, Soph
Anthony D'Avanzo, PF, Senior (D2 Grad transfer who can shoot from the outside)
JD Muila, C, Junior

Mullins has said before he prefers a 4-guard lineup, but he has more height than last year's team so I think he'll end up sticking with D'avanzo and Muila together to start the year. I think a wildcard though would be in Dalton Banks, who is a true freshman PG who could work his way into the starting lineup to push D'Avanzo or Muila out so they play 4 guards; at the very least though SIU can finally "go big" against teams like Bradley even though they're still undersized a bit.

Here would be my guess for Bradley:

PG - Danya Kingsby (Started 25 games last year, will be a senior)
SG - Terry Nolan (Transfer from George Washington. Sat out last year, but practiced with team, Junior)
SF - Ville Tahvanainen (Will be the sharpshooter replacing Kennel, sophomore)
PF - Elijah Childs (No Brainer, 1st team all conference talent, Senior)
C - Ari Boya (Will replace Koch Bar as rim protector. Junior)

Dark horses that could change the above:
PG - Sean East, transfer from UMass if he gains immediately eligibility to play, Sophomore
SF/PF - Ja'shon Henry - Wardle could go big with Ja'shon at SF, or small with Ja'shon at PF and Childs at C
SF - Kevin McAdoo, transfer from Eastern Michigan, sat out last year, Junior
PF - Reink Mast - Redshirt Freshman, stretch 4 man who can shoot 3. Play him at 4 Childs at 5.

It is likely that Loyola will be starting five seniors, all returning starters from 19-20:

PG Keith Clemons, SR
G/F Lucas Williamson, SR
G/F Tate Hall, SR
F Aher Uguak, SR
C Cameron Krutwig, SR

However, I think a lot of fans would like to see either Marquise Kennedy or Cooper Kaifes start in place of Uguak (who is really limited offensively). However, Porter emphasizes defense, defense, defense and with Uguak/Lucas both in the starting lineup, the Ramblers feature two of the best on-ball defenders in the MVC.

The Bears, like a number of teams, have a player or 2 who could shift the lineup one way or the other. My guess is unless someone like Skylar Wicks is really good from the get go, the starting lineup will be some combination of these six:

PG- Sharp
G- Mosley/Black
F- Hervey/Mosley
F - Ridder/Hervey
C- Prim

Wick should play a lot; he's a 6'6 freshman pg .
The Bear is the largest carnivore on the North American continent; beware the Bear!

Braden Norris will be your best guard. He may not start the opener but his play will leave Porter no option.

We shall see. Clemons had a really nice year last year, especially later in the season. But in his freshman year at Oakland, Norris was top 25 in the country in assist-to-turnover ratio and shot a whooping 48.6% from three (67 for 138).

If we can find a way to have Clemons (45.7%)/Norris (48.6%)/Kaifes (46.5%)/Hall (42.6%) on the court at once, that will be an absolutely lethal three point shooting squad. But the defense may suffer a bit without one of Uguak or Lucas.

From the handful of times I watched the Blers last year, I'd be surprised if Kennedy didn't start. Granted, I don't know the full scope of your roster, but starting 5 seniors is a great way to win the MVC. Older players, especially in this league, win games.

And Kennedy is the second best guard.

Reink Mast is ahead of Ari Boya on the depth chart. If he is healthy, he will start.
