Tulsa, both the private university itself and city leaders, are heavily invested into making FBS work. There is incredible civic interest tied into drawing OU, OSU, & UA into the city:

2023 - Oklahoma
2024 - Okie St
2026 - Okie St
2027 - Arkansas
2028 - Okie St
2030 - Okie St

Keep in mind one school has dropped 1-A/FBS football in the last 25 years: Idaho.

The move backfired costing Idaho over 50% of its ticket and contribution revenue. And this was a school trading the Sun Belt 2k miles away for the Big Sky with historical/nearby rivals (Montana, EWU, et al).
https://www.idahopress.com/sports/colle ... 58997.html
Idaho Vandal football’s first season back in the Big Sky Conference in the Football Championship Subdivision occurred during the fiscal year 2019. The report shows that ticket sales for Vandal football games and contributions to the program dropped by about 50% during that budget year.

Biggest factor of all: career suicide. Dropping down is a politically unfeasible move for university presidents. Take Idaho’s Chuck Staben. The man was so hated, it was reported that Vandals fans carried “Fire Chuck Staben” signs into football games and even paid to fly a banner plane at their bowl game. Staben was run out of town soon after the dropdown.

FBS football doesn’t have to be profitable. Many pro sports franchises don’t profit yet are valued at $XXX,XXX,XXX because they’re used as loss leaders for a larger business portfolio. Think of FBS programs as loss leaders and university presidents as CEOs. The FBS program is used as a marketing driver for the university (ie. corporation).

Tulsa is a school with just 4,000 students but a billion dollar endowment. They had the good fortune to be founded in the middle of oil country. Skelly Stadium is named after an oil tycoon. They operate FBS football at a loss because they can and I don't see that changing but if it ever did the Valley would welcome them back with open arms.

The Redbirds were slotted to host UT-San Antonio as a part of a H/H this season. UTSA backed out due to "budgetary restrictions." Muller hopes they fulfill their side of the contract in 2021.

The Birds have two games the schedule and are looking for a buy game.

Most of the A10 budgets are healthy enough to withstand road trips to St. Louis. Many teams are still scheduling games all over the country next year, but yes, there is more regional scheduling. I believe most of them had budgets of $23M or more, with Bona and La Salle being the outlier on the low end at about $14-15M. Davidson is at $18M, but everyone else is between $24-40M.

The A10 is also adopting regional pod scheduling for most of their sports next year.

Granted those budget numbers will go down this year.

But for comparison's sake, Illinois St and SIU spent $26M on all sports in FY18, while the balance of Valley schools' expenditures in athletics fall in in the $14-18M range, with Evansville in the rear with $12M.

SLU has more alumni in DC or NY than central IL, and more alumni in Boston, Philly, or Cincy/Dayton than Iowa or Indiana.

A10 membership is a university-strategic decision to recruit students and connect with alumni for donations. If A10/MVC hoops were indistinguishable, SLU would stick with the A10. In 2005 and 2006, the MVC got 7 bids to the A10’s 2 but SLU showed no interest switching over.

Budget, endowment, catholicism, alumni locales — SLU views the A10 as its institutional peers before basketball is a subject.

Exactly. More students from across the nation, and around the globe, as well. They have maintained a national profile by putting themselves in NYC and DC. That's what it's about for them. . .exposure and national relevance from a general student standpoint. And it has paid off for them, which many don't realize.

SLU is more likely to wait for a Big East invite than ever accept an MVC offer.

That is what SLU is waiting for. I see the Big East most likely just adding 1 (obviously Catholic Dayton is most deserving) and staying at 11 with 20 game conference schedule. If the Big East goes to 12 I would think the Big East would go back to public's like they did with Connecticut. I would imagine they would want someone more like Wichita State before St. Louis. I just don't think St. Louis will ever get an invite but they will wait

I think St. Louis probably adds more to the Big East than Dayton does since it would be a new media market and a bridge to Creighton. Dayton basically overlaps Xavier.

edit: I forgot that UCONN officially rejoins the Big East tomorrow.

From a pure basketball standpoint you can make an argument for Wichita State joining the Big East one day, but if academics and institutional fit matter at all then the Shockers don't have a prayer of getting into that conference. I've long believed that they will ride out the AAC until the P5 decide what they're going to do and then move west joining the MWC as the MWC looks to become a seventh power basketball league also courting the likes of BYU Gonzaga St Mary's and New Mexico State. The west needs a second strong basketball league and the MWC can easily fill that void after the next realignment.

If and when the Big East expands to 12 I think the pecking order is as follows:

1. SLU for the reasons you stated

2. Dayton (basketball strength)

3. Everyone else.
