Double G Lobbying for Tennessee job?

Wichita State is a very different program than the rest of the Valley. WSU has tremendous equity and resources that can be tapped for future growth. As Mark Turgeon said, Wichita is a major program trapped in a mid-major conference. He has the largest fanbase by far in the Valley and unmatched recruiting resources. He is paid north of $925,000 and has an $80,000 budget for personal flights -most of which are by way of private jet.

Dude--Wichita State is certainly one of the elite programs in the Valley but let's not go overboard here.

Since we have resurrected this thread, here is an interesting discussion. Since we all know, or should know that the Valley is not a conference of destination type coaching jobs and All Valley coaches are, or should be building their resumes, who do you think will be the next current three coaches, in order, to move out and "up" from the Valley? I put "up" in quotations because not all BCS type jobs are actually upward career builders.

My guess:
1. Martin. Has done a fantastic job at MSU, has lots of influential friends within the BCS coaching circle and is a very competitive person. His personality drives him to be the best at the highest level, plus his compensation would be tripled or quadrupled at a BCS school. Martin does want to be the big fish in the big pond.
2. Jacobson. Great coach, great with kids and smart as heck. He knows X's and O's as well as anyone and can recruit plus work with what he has. He is comfortable at UNI but has already proven himself. He has done all he can do at UNI. He can make much, much more almost anywhere else. His loyalty to UNI can run only so deep.
3. Marshall. gregg Marshall has been, and will continue to be a target of bigger schools. I would put Marshall ahead of Jacobson except for the fact that he has been very cautious of moves his entire career. He won't move until the move is right. If the right move comes along sooner, Marshall could be first.

I'd say this is a solid assessment.

I hope the MVC can return to the success of the mid-00s and perhaps even return 2 teams simultaneously to the sweet 16 ala 2006. I hope the Shocks are there but with the current pattern of behavior of not meeting expectations or playing to potential I honestly do not know, when or if this will ever be.

Like a lot of Shocker fans, I was upset when Turgeon went to A&M. Time has changed my views on coaches sticking around at Valley schools. After thinking more about Turgeon's last year at WSU and the last few years Altman was at Creighton, I think that it is very possible for coaches to stick around too long at a Valley school and lose the edge they need to succeed at this level. Part of me hopes Marshall will see a lot of potential at WSU and stick around for a while, but also accepts that he may reach a point where the limitations start to chaff too much and when that day comes he should go.

Even KU fans have seen there coach take off for elsewhere a couple of times. Self could decide at some point he wants to try the NBA. If a program like KU cannot count on keeping their coach, no Valley school can rest easy that something won't tempt their coach away.

It would be nice to see Marshall stick around a little longer to give the program a little more stability. But WSU has lots of reasons to be attactive to other coaches around if he does leave. While Turgeon had stumbled a little bit his last year at WSU, he did leave the program in much better shape than he found it. Turgeon will have a special place in WSU history for bringing the program out of the abyss it had been in for far too long. Hopefully, when Marshall does decide to leave, we can look back and say he left it in at least as good of shape as he found it.
