Elgin to Retire

He will retire at the end of the 2020-21 school year. I think he served the conference well during his time. Obviously, sending one team to the Final 4 and then replacing that school with another Final 4 team.

It will be good to get some fresh idea's in the commissioner's chair but I really appreciate what Elgin has done for the league.

To the new commissioner, there is one thing that you have to promise to do.... KEEP ARCH MADNESS IN SAINT LOUIS FOREVER.

Elgin saved this league in the early 90s. Hemorrhaging members, tanking numbers, no success.

The vision to bring in a successful but newer DI member in SMS and taking a chance on the potential that UNI had under all obstacles saved the league. The scheduling mandate, gaming the RPI and Arch Madness were all thought to be crazy but he made it all work. That's before you even start talking about all the NCAA events hosted including both a Men's and Women's Final Four.

It's a sad day to see him go but he certainly deserves a great retirment.

He had his time but should have retired 10 years ago. Time to get someone with vision who can convince and rally the President's.

End of an era for sure. Commissioners are always targets for criticism, but I think he has been outstanding.

I think our next commissioner needs to be someone with ties to the media rights world. Some creativity is needed to showcase the conference and explore new revenue streams.

Agreed... He was well respected amongst his peers, and we need to make sure that we get a replacement that is equally respected.

I'm in the minority here but I would actually love to see Arch Madness in a different location rotating around. I think Des Moines would do an outstanding job, Chicago could work if you can find the right situation, KC probably doesn't make much sense anymore without Wichita and Crayton, but I think Indy could be on the table and would do a good job too.......but I digress.

Elgin did an outstanding job as commish. If you look at where the league was when he took over, what it has done during his time, and where it is now......its crazy. He put the Valley on the map. Will be interesting to see who they bring in and what his or her approach is going to be.

I disagree. Keep it in St. Louis. Des Moines in boring. Chicago is too expensive. KC/Omaha are too far out of the footprint now. The history of the event helps draw much needed attention.

I agree. As much as I as an Indiana resident would love to see the tournament in Indy or Chicago for proximity reasons there is no reason whatsoever to move the tournament from St Louis. 1. It has a long and proud history there. 2. The tournament is already a top notch experience. I haven't been yet but I can tell just from watching and listening to the stories of people who have gone. 3. It is the only city in our footprint that provides a true neutral site. Indy I think would favor the Indiana schools too much.

The MVC has two Final Four teams during the past 10 years - one by a member that was added to the league in the same span.

Any future commissioner is going to have a very tough time replicating the success of Doug Elgin.
