What seniors do you think will take advantage of the extra year?
Obviously a guy like Krut, Primm, or Key would really boost next years chances but will they?

Based on Loyola's recruiting I don't think anyone's coming back. We recently added two grad transfers from the Ivy League and are involved with at least 2 others. The fifth year is great in theory, but in practice it can really logjam a programs player development (and would give a lot of your younger players a good reason to transfer). LU has a lot of younger players like Kennedy, Welch, Kaifes, Hebb, and Hutson who are ready to step into bigger roles, as well as an uber talented freshman in Ty Johnson who'll compete for major playing time.

That all said who knows, maybe they'll return despite all I just said it'd be freaking awesome to see this group play in person. It really sucks these seniors don't get to play in front of fans across the country.

Drake HC Devries said in an interview this week that as of now, everyone is planning to come back next year.

Drake only has two starting seniors right?

Yes, two starters (Hemphill and Murphy) and one reserve (Jonah Jackson)

I suspect the extra year exception will help close the gap between the "one and done" schools and the rest of the field next year. A lot more talent and experience being retained for the non-blue bloods.

I guess the concern is that the "power conference" schools will just have a bigger crop of talent to harvest from the rest of the schools.

Agreed on this. For Drakes situation, if everyone returning plus Tucker DeVries (who's no doubt going to bite into guard play time), all of a sudden schools will look at someone like DJ Wilkins or Joe Yesufu and will be able to push on play time/facilities/no sit out year/etc. At Loyola I'd worry the same about Marquise Kennedy should all of our guards return. I think both teams have team first cultures, and it may not affect them. But with bloated rosters across the country the transfer market has potential to be a mess.

I think you have to be careful with who and how many you might bring back. The natural progression of players can get disrupted if your sophomore/junior classes don't have a path to assuming greater roles on the team as they advance. In recruiting, a player signs last Nov expecting a certain opportunity , then finds his position is not thinning out and he might be sitting longer than he anticipated. On the other hand, we all know that MM programs are most often able to compete with the majors when our programs are older and mature vs the more talented but less experienced majors. Obviously some really unique dynamics to be considered . Also if you bring most everybody back, the assumption that the team will be better doesn't allow for the fact some players might have reached their potential already and so the team doesn't improve because the players still filling the same roles aren't better, just a year older.
