LOL. Guess you just had to find the guy that thinks $200k is a great salary.

I’ve followed this guy for years. This is an excellent hire by the Trees. Schertz is a helluva coach. He’ll do very well at INSU. This is exactly what they needed after the Lansing debacle.

And guess what - if you can coach, you can coach. Doesn’t matter what division you’re in. Ever hear of Bo Ryan?

D-I isn’t the only place you can find talent. You don’t win 83% of your games over 13 years by being second rate. Some of you guys are laughable in your arrogance.

Sounds like a guy worth taking a chance on. D2 success does not always translate. Kurt Kanaskie was a very successful D2 coach before he went 0-36 in the Valley in his first two years at Drake.

True, but Kanaskie didn’t have nearly the level of sustained success in D-II that Schertz has had. Yes, I’m biased because I’ve been following his teams for so long, but the guy can coach. My bet is he’s gonna do very well at INSU.

For every Bo Ryan there are multiple dozens of guys that don't make it. The big thing is that InSU is obviously not investing any more into their program so it probably doesn't matter anyway.

I don't think there is any "formula" that has worked more than another - if there were everyone would do it.

Hiring "P5 Assistant Guy", hiring low-major coach, hiring NBA alum guy, hiring D2/D3 guy - some work, some don't. However I am bullish on D2 and D3 coaches.

I think the big key in hiring a D-2 guy regardless of his winning ways, is does he add guys on staff who have a history of and the contacts to recruit at the D-1 level. W/O that, I don't care how good his xs/os are; he better be able to get players . I probably would always have a guy with juco HC experience on staff, not only because of their contacts in that arena for recruiting, but because they have experience in how to meld a team of moving parts annually which is becoming more the norm for many MM.

Bruce didn't come up in D-II, though. He was an assistant at Iowa. The only reason he had to deal with the purgatory of D-II was because D-I was blackballing him after the Deon Thomas incident.

It’s not just about the X’ and O’s. It’s also about the Jimmy’s and Joe’s and whether or not he can recruit at this level.
