How does NIL impact The Valley?

Now that the NCAA has abdicated any oversight of student athletes being compensated for Name, Image, Likeness (NIL), how does this impact the future of the MVC At face value, it just got a lot more difficult to recruit fringe P5 players because of their obvious sales pitch regarding potential future compensation if they attend bigger institutions.

I think it'll be player retention that suffers the most. There's still only so many scholys and roster spots available at the upper levels , so players will still end up choosing MM programs initially because that will still be their best option. But once they achieve some level of value to a P-5 program, now there will be even more incentive for them to bolt and it will be quite within the rules.

In some ways this could benefit MM in that most will never be able to compete with that process to have the number and quality of booster/advertiser $$ to play that system. Just won't. Eventually, just as in football, the Majors will break away, or form their own exclusive group . Think about in football, you have FCS and FBS, but 40-50 FBS schools aren't ever gonna be able to compete for a Natty even if they go undefeated [ which has already been proven] so it's like they don't even exist in that level. MBB is moving that direction as now for over 250 D-1 schools they are essentially down to a 3-4 game span in March to even get a chance at the Natty , and that will diminish more in the next few seasons. Once that happens, schools like ours will have to make decisions about whether tis nobler to continue to try to fight a system rigged against them or choose to group with similar schools for attainable goals like is done in football. College sports will survive , perhaps flourish, but there will be an even more defined class system.

1. Schools must come up with a NIL systems and packages.
2. It will provide more incentive for entering the portal.
a. Many P5 recruits won’t perform well enough to earn what they were “promised.” They’ll find out later that the contract says they get paid off their performance is X,Y,Z. And they’ll transfer out.
b. Many top MM recruits will be offered big money to leave for a P5. Schools and boosters will need to step up.
3. Good but not lottery-pick P5 players will see more money in their P5 school than they would ever hope to get in the G-or-D League. So they’ll stay longer in school.
4. Team chemistry will stink and play will suffer where a few players are getting ~6 figures. This will make them potentially more bearable.
5. Academics will be very interesting.

I don’t necessarily see this as causing a FCS/FBS type of split.

Oh, and a lot of players will say, “Last year I got $50,000 in cash in a gym bag-tax free. This year I got $60,000 and I paid $12,000 in taxes.”
That’s the one I’m going to laugh at the most.

In basketball, certain schools, with one or two extremely rich boosters, will have all players on salary for appearing in a commercial or two. This will presumably be all power 5 schools, but there will be some others. All it takes is on billionaire with an interest in making a school a successful program. Not sure what those schools will be, but my guess is that schools like Oral Roberts and Liberty may start paying a lot of money for players. There will probably end up being anew national powerhouse or two because of some rich supporters.

Perhaps a common refrain heard over the next few years as a player doesn't like the feedback he gets from his coach ; "You're not the one paying my salary" !

I expect that the IRS would disallow "over" market rate deductions for this. My logic being that this is not a true tax expense but an indirect contribution to your favorite institution.

Another aspect that we could see is that a team could offer walk-on status with no scholy but enough NIL to make it a non-issue, allowing them to stock pile a bit . While a player might balk at being #12-15 on a team, if he's being compensated , might not matter as much to some, which could scoop up a few marginal P-5 guys that otherwise would go MM.

I mean let's be real, if we can think of it, someone will attempt it .
