Gonzaga is going Big East. Theyre too big of a program for the Big East to pass despite location. Theyve already talked about it in previous years. It will happen in the next couple of years.

If schools could do basketball only affiliations I could see this but since it would have to be an all sports add not a chance. Neither Gonzaga nor the Big East wants that travel headache. It would be a dream come true for Gonzaga from a basketball standpoint and if they were anywhere near Omaha, Nebraska or any point east of that it would have been done already but the geography just doesn't make sense. The best union of school and conference for Gonzaga assuming losing BYU is enough to get them to leave the WCC is the Mountain West since the Pac 12 doesn't do Olympics only affiliations. I used to think maybe they could possibly get into the AAC if the AAC ever did a westward expansion to make it semi palatable for all parties but that's definitely not happening now. No western team is leaving for the post Cincinnati Houston UCF AAC and the league probably isn't good enough for Gonzaga anyway when they would have a comparable or better and certainly cheaper option in the Mountain West if they were to make a move.

its also no out of the realm of possibility since both are the two weakest conferences that the pac-12 or big-12 after getting to 16 will add two basketball only schools like gonzaga and wichita state in the big-12 neighborhood.

Yes it is. The Big 12 and Pac 12 aren't adding anybody that doesn't play football. There's absolutely no money for them in schools that don't play football.

I think as long as the MVC holds onto its current teams, this is a good thing for a conference. If the AAC can get anyone from the A10 or MWC (regardless if its basketball only/full membership), it will only dilute the talent among the 7-10 conferences (I am considering the MVC at 11th best conference currently). With the teams left in the AAC, there is a case to be made that they really aren't better than the MVC by much, if at all. There is a chance that we end up being a top 10 conference soon. I'm not sure that it means much, but still nice to say.

Saw this elsewhere ranking the leagues pre- and post- most recent realignment.

Image

Big 12 slides a little losing OU and Texas, but remains atop league rankings. Look at the hit that the AAC takes.

MVC stands pat at #11.

I'd love to see where the WCC ends up without Gonzaga.

Spoiler: Somewhere in the mid-teens

It is really hard to see Gonzaga remaining in the WCC after BYU leaves. I wrote about the reasons for this a few posts back. It's a huge blow to their SOS to lose that home and home with BYU and now be forced to play two more games against the bottom of the WCC. With the MWC losing nobody in this current round and potentially not losing anybody next round depending on what else the Big XII does if anything it becomes significantly more appealing for Gonzaga. The WCC gave Gonzaga every concession they possibly could even with BYU in the conference what can they do now that they will be wholly unable to replace BYU?

Agree completely. They actually might be able to more or less go independent and work out playing home and homes with some of the WCC and WAC teams and then play a bunch of neutrals sites and their usual buy games. I'd think an in-season home and home with Memphis makes a ton of sense.

They have the money to do it if they're creative with it. I could also see the Mountain West having a loose alliance with them as well kind of like Notre Dame and ACC Football.
