So one of two things happen. One the conference stays at 11 and rewards
the conference champ with a 1st round bye.And two the conference starts
courting other schools and if one joins then Murray doesn't have a date for the prom.

If true it is a stunning reversal from the attitudes of these two institutions just a few short years ago. I don't think it's true though. There's too much ancillary stuff going on around Murray State (the facilities upgrades the partnership with the same group the MVC uses the reticence on the part of anyone associated with the university to comment much at all one way or the other). I think the football issues might be a significant hurdle here as has been suspected by several people. I would be supportive of them just finding any old home for their football program (even the Pioneer) just to get this done but that is clearly not what they want. This would be so much easier if WIU would just make the sensible move and join the OVC and have Murray State take their spot on the MVFC schedule but that's not what WIU wants apparently. I sincerely hope they will find a football home soon and we will have a robust 12 team league going forward. I'd prefer that this be resolved before the season starts but we are running out of time. This might be an offseason thing as it takes time to set up affiliate relationships. Short of a return of Wichita State there is no public school add that could have the same potential positive impact on the league that Murray State can. I would rather stay at 11 and realize the scheduling benefits of having a Belmont home and home replace non D1s on our schedules rather than just add a public school just to add. For me on the public end it's Wichita Murray State or pretty much nothing. I guess I'd be okay with NKU SDSU or Little Rock but I would be disappointed and felt like we left meat on the expansion bone by not waiting to add Murray State (unless the prize is Wichita State in which case I would advocate a 14 team model that's how much I believe in Murray State's potential impact). As impatient as I have been I am willing to wait to let them sort out their issues because I believe they are sincere about joining. If they weren't they would have said they were staying or would have gone somewhere else. And they wouldn't be preparing or positioning themselves the way the few leaks that have come out of Murray State have shown them to be positioning themselves. I just hope it happens soon

I don’t think that has a basis in fact. I’d bet dollars to donuts that Murray isn’t the one holding this back.

First round bye?

The Top 5 would get first round byes.

How are people still making this so hard?

The only thing an 11th does is put a 6-11 game on Thursday. We aren't some rinky dink outfit that puts their champ in the semifinals.

Thursday-
8 v 9--3:00
7 v 10--5:30
6 v 11--8:00

Friday, Saturday, Sunday run just like they always have. If/when we add 12, Thursday mirrors Friday (8 v 9, 5 v 12, 7 v 10, 6 v 11)

I understand the need to wait to make sure that things get finalized properly but I wish there was some sort of update on the progress of Murray State's search for a temporary solution for its football team or the status of Murray State vis a vis conference membership. Do they have the votes? If not who's blocking and why?

How quiet was it at Valpo before they announced?

Extremely. I couldn't get a gosh darn thing out of anybody with any connection outside of smatterings. It was honestly very similar to this. It also didn't take quite this long but then again that was an off-season move (basically) the process happened in April and May if I recall correctly which made it easier to have a quicker turnaround. I wonder if the Thanksgiving timeline I have heard discussed is possibly because of football. They want to make sure Murray State is allowed to finish out the year's competition before announcing their new future home. That way once the fall sports have started Murray State can announce at least its football move to signal that it's happening. Does the OVC have really strict competition bylaws that would allow a team that has announced an intent to withdraw to be pulled from competition? That was a reason for the delay at Valpo. We had to wait 16 days or so from invite to acceptance because we needed to wait for baseball and softball to finish so that the Horizon League couldn't bar our teams from competition. Could that be what's happening here?

Not barring them from competition, but they could bar teams from receiving the conference autobid, or at least that is what I have been told. Not sure that is what is going on here.

According to posts on this board the Southland wasn't interested in an affiliation with Murray State but what if they also lose McNeese State? The last line of this article suggests that McNeese State is involved in talks with CUSA about potentially moving up. Also Sam Houston State from the WAC. I would not be surprised to see a few more Lone Star Conference callups made from D2 to fill out membership holes but if the Southland needs a counting ready to go member right now Murray State could fill that hole for them.

Edit: I'm guessing the WAC would be more likely. The Southland has that agreement with the OVC for scheduling which probably means that adding Murray State as an affiliate would be a non-starter in light of that. Moreover, they added Texas A&M Commerce as well meaning they don't NEED an affiliate even though it would help them have more games. But the WAC would be short of its autobid meaning that maybe Murray State could park its program there for awhile. It sounds like the best thing to hope for would be that CUSA finds a way to pull it together and survive so that there is more instability in FCS and Murray State has more options to find a spot for a few years while the MVFC sorts things out (assuming that's the holdup).

The biggest takeaway from this Tweet vis a vis finding a home for Murray State's football is that Liberty is no longer interested in CUSA. That makes it less likely that CUSA survives which means that fewer teams will be migrating from FCS to FBS which means fewer spots available to Murray State for an affiliation. One saving grace is that James Madison is one of the teams expected to follow Southern Miss to the Sun Belt meaning there's a spot in the CAA. If Hampton fills that spot the Big South would be down to just 6 schools meaning maybe they would want to allow the Racers an affiliate membership.

New Mexico State Sam Houston State and Tarleton State being looked at by CUSA. This would blow a massive hole in the WAC and possibly allow for a Murray State affiliation somewhere to resolve the football hurdle assuming football is indeed the holdup.
