I know football leads a lot of these moves but Memphis and SMU to the Big 12 makes too much sense. These two are very decent basketball programs, though Tim Jank hasn't changed and his record remains inflated. Jank vs Self every year would be interesting.

You get another Texas rivalry with SMU and Memphis is a good regional opponent, kind of centrally located in the conference. I hope that move happens just to see what Wichita does. I'm here for the drama. :D

I checked on Shockernet and I think their fans still believe for the most part that the AAC is better than the MVC and as long as Memphis and to a lesser but still important extent SMU are still there and until Murray State is officially added that will probably remain true but if the AAC suffers one or more defections of their top teams and we also get Murray State on board I would fail to see much of a gap between the two conferences in my view. It would make sense for Wichita State to go more regional and basketball oriented. This isn't the Valley they left. Before they left:

1. Loyola hadn't shown its potential Now they have a Final 4 and a Sweet 16 and are a budgetary peer

2. We just became a multibid league again without their help and with a good shot to do it again over the next few years

3. We have added Belmont another very strong program and might very well get Murray State soon two programs that singlehandedly made a 24th ranked OVC a multibid league in 2019 with both teams winning a game in the tournament a feat the MVC also accomplished in 2021 albeit with a much higher NET ranking.

This league is WAY BETTER than the league they left and the AAC is far worse now than the league they joined. Does that mean they will come back? Not inherently but there is a very strong argument to be made that the Valley would be a great landing spot for the Shockers nowadays especially if they have no other option. Obviously a MWC that goes all in on basketball with Gonzaga and St Mary's added in addition to them is still a better league but if that doesn't happen the MVC is a terrific place for them now and now that we proved we can survive without them I think the league will be better as a whole and more competitive than the one they left.

People always underestimate how heavy those bottom teams are. Especially when you play them twice. Its even worse if you happen to lose to one.

Fortunately for the American they have 14 teams so they can get creative with their scheduling but they added A LOT of potential bottom feeders to their ranks which is not good. I think KenPom has the WCC ahead of the AAC right now BEFORE the additions take effect. Imagine what it'll be like afterwards.

This is also the importance of expansion for our league because if we can add more top level quality teams we can use the creative scheduling to maximize Q1 and Q2 opportunities and hopefully at large bids or at least lead to better seeding. This is why I'm such a strong advocate for MVC expansion.

I'll reiterate the Wichita chose the s*** covered bed and now they can lay in it.

When the entire reason your league exists is because everyone got passed over and everyone's stated goal is to get out, you don't get complain when everyone starts getting out.

Zero sympathy for them. Hitch your horse to a racist bully that says the dumbest, arrogant things imaginable and get what you deserve.

I do agree that they should have thought about the ramifications of joining a football league where all the members want to get out and on to greener pastures but I also get why they made the move because at the time it was a better situation. I definitely get the animosity for Wichita State. I really do. Their fans and ex coach were super arrogant and my few interactions with Wichita State fans on this board were mostly unpleasant but pragmatically speaking you can't deny that their return would benefit the league. Even though the league is fine without them it is even better if they do return. I mean imagine a league where we get Murray State to go to 12 and then Wichita State comes back and then we get say an NKU or something as #14. That is a league with ample Q1 and Q2 opportunities for everyone and a shot at not only multiple top 25 ranked teams every year but 3+ bids. That is something we should all want even if putting up with Wichita State's hubris is less than ideal. I think they would find this iteration of the Valley far tougher and would not just waltz in and dominate the way they were used to over the past few years of their first tenure in the conference.

VU I agree with everything you said concerning the impact of a return of WSU, I do wonder, though, historically of how many teams were readmitted to their former conference? I also think about the egos that would be involved. Money will essentially be the deciding factor. I would think presently the revenues the AAC receive will drop significantly soon,,,even more so once Memphis and SMU gets poached. At that point if the MVC can land a good television contract things could get interesting. For now, however. I am anxiously awaiting an announcement of Murray 'State joining us.

To be fair to Shocker fans, while their keyboard warriors can most certainly be annoying, every interaction I’ve ever had IN PERSON with a Shocker fan has been great. They are, by and large, a knowledgeable group, very loyal to their school, and appreciative, and respectful, of other teams’ fans.

You can’t judge a group of fans based solely on anonymous internet trolls. I’d welcome the Shockers back to the MVC with open arms. They would be a great addition and would further raise the profile of the league.

Either way, we get to bring back the NOT A STATE chants and the rest of the league wins.

100% agree with BC on this. The Valpo fan and others who are pining for Wichita sound like some lonely, jilted lover, sitting by the phone waiting on the cheating ex to call back. I don't begrudge them for leaving..I would take Creighton back in a nano-second. They simply do not fit.

Q1 wins today don't equal automatic Q1 wins forever. How many Q1 wins were the Shockers good for between 88-06? Everyone in this league has had periods of success and periods of being the dregs. The good thing with us, is when our schools are the dregs, they typically are still spending and drawing well above the dregs in many conferences. The point being, presidents don't care about the hot basketball team of the day, or if the online fanbase is full of assbags like Wichita, as much as they do things like institutional compatibility, academics and reputation. When we finally resolve the Murray obstacles, we will have 6 publics who are fantastic fits across the board, and 6 privates the same. Where does a non-football public in Kansas fit into this scenario? Again, it simply doesn't.

I know Valpo fan, they have a national image. Wichita and Loyola gave this league a recent Final Four run. Loyola gave us Sister Jean and Chicago. Wichita presented an abusive coach who went down in flames as well as his drunken wife. Their last period of success came crashing down with probation in the late 80's. In between those periods, the only other time they were in the national spotlight was when they looked the other way, and actually defended their beloved baseball coach, after he ordered a 95MPH fastball to the temple of an opposing player, who was in the on-deck circle. All for the horrible crime of appearing to time pitches. Unlike some of you, my image of Wichita has nothing to do with their on-line warriors. I actually enjoyed some of them.

The Great Midwest, Conference USA, Sun Belt and now AAC were all conferences that started out as the hottest new thing in athletics. All have or are falling for the exact reasons some of you are advocating we follow....add schools for current basketball or football status without any institutional fit. SLU, Dayton and now Wichita are just some of the programs who have been burned by jumping into these situations, and then suddenly left behind when the others bolt. The new Big East is the one exception, and guess what, they all have institutional fit.

We will never be a P5 conference, and it is doubtful any of our members will be in one. It is also entirely possible at some point, we won't even be playing in the same tournament. If our end game is to be the best of the rest, then our stability, and institutional compatibility will be our biggest strength. Like I said, our soon to be 12 members all bring a history of athletic success, as well as long term stability and compatibility. Finish up the Murray details, and turn the No Vacancy light on.
