Belmont loses a lot at the end of this season, but they have some talent returning. Of course, transfers can change this a lot, but Belmont typically doesn’t take in many transfers or loses many.
Losing: Nick Muszynski who we call Moose, is our center who is currently averaging 18.5 ppg, 6.6 rpg and 3.25 apg. We also lose Grayson Murphy who last year led the nation in rebounding from the guard position. He’s getting fewer this year due to a freshman that taken many of them. Our third starter that is gone is Luke Smith, who is usually a shooter, but is struggling so far this year. We’re also losing Caleb Hollander who is oft injured and plays sporadically. Tate Pierson, a pretty good bench player, is also gone.
Returning: Two starters are returning, Sophomore Ben Sheppard and Freshman Will Richard, averaging 16.3 and 10.3 ppg respectively. Jacobi Wood will probably inherit the point from Grayson Murphy. He’s a streaky shooter that when he is hot is amazing. We signed 4 freshmen to come in next year with another freshman that is redshirting this year.
Notables on the roster who played high school ball in the MVC footprint:
Even Brauns 6-9 center from Iowa City, IA
EJ Bellinger 6-4 guard from St. Peters, MO
Frank Jakubicek 6-8 power forward from Cary, IL
I'll piggyback on this great summary a little bit.
Belmont's back court next year will be fantastic. Despite losing Grayson Murphy and Luke Smith we will have Ben Shepherd, JaCobi Woods, and Will Richard, any of which can put 25 on the board on any given day. In addition to those we will have Isaiah Walker (6'5" redshirt freshman guard) as well a couple true freshman that will be ready to contribute from day one.
The big issue for us as we enter the Valley will be our bigs. We lose Moose, who is irreplaceable, but the problem is right now we don't have anyone that could even pretend to replace him. One of the biggest things I'm watching this year is the development of Evan Brauns (6'9" sophomore center). He is physically massive at 250 lbs and has some touch around the basket. The biggest issue is he is having a difficult time figuring out Belmont's constant motion offense. His inability to find his place on the floor and make the next right decision is making it really difficult to give him much PT. IF he can figure that out it would be a huge development for next year.
Outside of Evan we have a few guys that have size (Frank Jakubicek 6'8" 245/Derek Sabin 6'9" 235). They can eat up some minutes but aren't true back to the basket posts and we don't have anyone signed that could fill that role.
Bottom line, Belmont is going to be good but whether or not they are going to be great depends on one or two or the big boys already on the roster taking huge steps forward.
On a personal note, I'm really glad to be here. Ready to wreck the OVC one more time and enter the MVC with another banner.
