Yes I wrote the post about the conference challenge with the SoCon before the Western Carolina loss by Chattanooga was factored in. I still stand by my post that ta challenge with the SoCon is a good idea especially if it helps us get a deal done with Bally Sports South and Southeast. That additional media coverage will be important for the conference.

My Dad and I have been waiting and hoping thirty years for Murray to get out of the OVC, ever since the OVC started expanding by adding division II teams really. Could not be happier to join the MVC because most of the other alternatives I have seen are decidedly worse in terms of either travel expenses or quality of institutions or both, assuming we had other options. The OVC was already hurting from losing EKU and Jacksonville State, who have been decent to good recently, and now losing Belmont, Austin Peay, and Murray, it's going to be rough for whoever is left on that sinking ship. My guess is they'll add still more former division II teams and cement themselves as a perennial 16 seed play-in. Looking forward to playing programs with some history, tradition, and commitment to winning. Seems an odd thing to say, but it's good that Murray won't be winning the conference title every other year for the next three decades. Playing consistently better competition will mean fewer titles, but it will make us a better program in the long term. I'd like to thank the decision makers at Oklahoma and Texas whose shameless money grab set this Rube Goldberg machine of conference affiliation rolling.

Good post. We're glad to have Murray State on board as well and believe they fit right in with the MVC. I don't think Oklahoma and Texas's move directly led to this but if it did I am grateful for it as well! I'm just glad this long overdue marriage between the Racers and the Valley finally happened!

LOL - I would’ve never known there was a Mississippi Valley Conference if not for that video. Cool history/stadium montage at the end.

Obviously it's not that big of a deal, but a while back we were discussing if the Racers would leave the Missouri Valley banner hanging in the rafters. Well, according to a pic on their basketball page, the banner is still hanging. I haven't gone to any OVC pages, but I wonder what those fans, if any, are saying about that.

They probably left the banner so that anyone who comes to a game for the rest of the season knows we're moving conferences. Murray State's fanbase is pretty savvy so the new conference will absolutely make a difference in attendance. Who we play already has a huge impact on turnout. I imagine they'll mention our conference change as often as they possibly can in every way they possibly can to sell those season tickets (betting they cost more next year too).

Coming from the Horizon League, you may not be aware just how bad the situation has gotten for the OVC. Murray is the fifth team to announce their departure over the past three years. Two of the exiting teams refused to pay the exit fee and are now getting sued. The five who left or are leaving were 5 out of the top 6 programs in basketball. Everybody could tell the ship was sinking. Everybody who could get off did. The administration and athletics department has been at odds with conference leadership for a good while now and have been trying to leave for some time so there's no real mystery where everybody stands.

Any theoretical fans of other teams remaining in the OVC will probably be less angry about us leaving and more angry that they couldn't get out themselves. Our fans probably like the fact they left it there, and I expect a lot of cheering anytime the new conference is mentioned. I half expect the band to play nah nah nah nah goodbye at the end of our last home game.

Welcome Murray State! Love to see a program who’s most visible player still comes back and has already given back to the university.

Morant's made around 20 trips back to Murray, Kentucky, since leaving after his sophomore season. There have been epic pickup games with former and current Murray State players…. Morant loves Murray State, takes great pride in it; it's still the header photo on his Twitter profile, which has north of 1.5 million followers. Murray State now has a "Ja Morant Recovery Room" in its practice facility, which he donated back to the program. It's one of the few mid-majors with NBA-level treatments for players getting work from team trainers.

ESPN also did an article today on the Racers... this and the CBS Sports articles are great if you're unfamiliar with the Racers.

Will K. J. Williams be wearing a Racers Uniform in the 2022-23 season?

I sure to God hope so. But if someone dangles a 6 figure check in his face I wouldn’t blame him for leaving.

I also hope he stays. Watched him play @ Redbird Arena back in November, although it wasn’t one of his better games (Brown & Hill killed us), I’m hoping to see him playing there again next season wearing a Racer’s uniform.
Hopefully Williams, Brown, & Hill all return.

He set a career high again yesterday, 39 pts with 6 rebounds 1 steal and 2 blocked shots. The final score was 73-62. Nobody else scored more than 9 points. He basically carried us to that victory.

He's 6'10', 245 lbs, looks like a beast in the weight room, and he's been using his reach to wreak absolute havoc in the passing lanes. He regularly checks much smaller guys on the perimeter. I said last year he was our best player and now I don't feel it's particularly close. The only bugaboos he has are inconsistency and occasional foul trouble. He started as a guy who couldn't do much other than dunk and rebound but has improved every season in about every statistical category. He has obviously worked hard on his game, to the point he's copied the Olajuwon/Jordan baseline fall away jumper and hits it pretty regularly. I can't figure out why the NBA scouts haven't caught on to this guy. Only thing I can figure is he doesn't generate the jaw dropping highlights like Ja did. He has a game like this in the NCAA's, he won't be back next year.
