There are a lot of complaints about college basketball officials. And of course some justified. But no one has come up with a solid solution to fix the issue.

I really think public L2Ms would be a step in the right direction. I am sure, internally, that the supervisor of officials have their own critique process--but isn't there that saying about sunshine being the best disinfectant?

That's because it doesn't exist. The game is way too fast and these guys are traveling across the country every 12 hours. The NCAA can't, and shouldn't, make them employees so here we are.

The other thing that (most) Valley fans do is think that the nights we don't have your Higgins, Kissingers, Pollards of the world that we're going to get the same level. It's totally not fair to the younger guys that work Saturdays and mid-week fill-ins that have real jobs the rest of the time (Campbell, Grimshaw, Simmons, Durham etc) and the guys that are on their way up that just need reps (Malham, Shortt, Kumpf, Staggs) . They do 15-20 games a year not 80.

Lastly, no one is harder on these guys than themselves. They spend half time and a good hour after the games watching calls back to see what they missed and what not. It's not like they don't intrinsically care what happens on the floor. They're some of the last people out of the arena a lot of nights.

Exactly. There isn't an answer that makes sense. The officials pay goes up and up and up as it is. Paying more isn't going to get you better officials.

They take pride in their job. They are held accountable by the assignors often times. It's not perfect but it's the best we can do at this point.

From watching UNI and Drake it does seem that Drake wants to be a physical as they can to the point of getting officials to give up trying to call everything. That said, the officials in that game were downright awful on both ends and actually seemed to be working against each other at times. There was actually one point where one official wanted the shot clock reset and another came over to say it should stay only for the first to come back and reset it again. They were definitely not in sync with each other at all.

As for the Illinois State game, I don't think I have ever heard of the three officials from that game, Steve Honacki, Tyler Kumpf, Shane Staggs? I'm not going to go digging through box scores to see how many they have done, but I don't recall any of them in Cedar Falls.

Honacki works primarily in the Summit League and Big Sky. Staggs and Kumpf are up and comers that are starting to get some Valley reps and Kumpf is getting the occasional Big 12 look right now, he and Jeff Malham are on very similar paths. I'm kind of an officiating nerd, sorry....

Amazing there was only one missed call all game and it was that one.

There were a lot of missed calls I’m sure, but this was very obvious, and it ended the game.

There were some obvious ones that benefitted ISU during regulation. Had those not happened, there would have been no overtime and no controversy over the last shot. A blown call early in the game that costs a team 2 points is every bit as impactful as a blown call late in the game that costs a team two points. It's just that everybody remembers the one at the end of the game.

Both teams had a chance to win by making free throws, both teams missed several key ones.

I think the same can be said for UNI, Loyola and SIU. Loyola is very "handsy", but doesn't seem to get called for much. UNI is great at using hips and mid section to push guys off their path without using their hands. I'm guessing every team tries to get away with as much as they can. I can tell you for a fact that Drake has been called for more fouls than their opponent in the majority of games the last few years.

That's going to be the biggest adjustment for Belmont and Murray. This league is way more physical that they're coming from. UNI, Drake, SIU, Bradley will absolutely beat on you and the officiating is so much better in this league (most nights) that there's going to be some frustration and adjustment.

There was a pretty questionable foul call at the end of the UNI @ SIU game that led to the game winning free throws for UNI. It happens, and it didn't cost you the game. Bad calls happen both ways. It is incredible how many Illinois State fans on Twitter (and on message boards) that think they are such victims here. I guarantee a call went your way earlier in the game.
