MVC Network

Postby Chuck A » February 2nd, 2022, 2:07 am

I enjoy watching scores of College Hoops games on FS1, CBSSportsNetwork, ESPN+ and The Big Ten Network. This got me thinking. What say this Board about the possibility of a Missouri Valley Conference Network? Across the board, The Valley has teams that have garnered multiple bids to the NCAAs in various sports (basketball, baseball, etc). The conference, throughout its history, seems to have enough inventory for a 24 hour broadcast entity. With the upcoming '22-'23 season poised to be potentially a great one (at least on paper) and the Valley being a top 10-12 conference, does the MVC have what it takes to sustain its own network? Obviously for the Falls sports, the Network would add MVFC football to the package.

Could this be viable, let alone profitable?

I'd sign-up for it. It would have to be internally available, though.

What does "internally" available mean?

In 2010, yes. But this is 2020. Distribution of networks are sketchy now. Satellite subs are dropping like flies in a hot brothel. Cord-cutters have doomed cable. Streaming is where it's at. With no major platform to distribute a network, creating one would be a no-go in this day and age. ESPN+ dominates and it's the best option for getting our games in front of eyeballs.

I've been saying for a few years that a small conference like us could gather up all of its conference games and sell them exclusively to a single streaming platform for X dollars per school per year. You do this with an up-and-coming platform (DAZN was the example at the time) and sell it to them by essentially saying "use us as your testing ground for when you eventually want to bid for the NBA."

It isn’t financially viable. PAC-12 Network has been a major flop. The last time a non-P5 league tried a linear conference tv network (MTN) it was cancelled entirely — and that was when distribution was at its height and the MWC had the Mormon audience with BYU.

As for bundling everything and selling to a streaming platform, that runs counter to the MVC’s goals of exposure and bringing MVC basketball to alums. The goal is to reengage and reconnect with alums, and put yourself in front of prospective students. The CAA, DC United, etc. have tried things like selling inventory to FloSports and caused massive backlash from their fans.

We've basically already got it. A league branded network on ESPN+ with linear distribution of select games. TV/streaming will be the legacy of Doug Elgin, dude was WAAAAAAAAAAY ahead of his time on that.

Also, for the 20 game league produced linear package, getting on Bally South/Southeast is HUGE. 51 million more homes.

The mvc doesn't have enough appeal for its own network.
