MVC cities - what to do/see/eat

Postby sivert » February 21st, 2022, 10:54 am

A conversation in another thread made me think this might be interesting.

Name team, and city and tell us what’s worth doing/seeing/eating where you are and where you have visited.

Panther fan here.
My family has been to loyola and to Drake. And after the Drake trip we said, maybe we want to try to visit more MVC sites.

So… Cedar Falls travel guide…
Coffee- best coffee is Sidecar. Several locations. They roast their own and have several good varietals.
Pizza- our favorite is Basal. It’s a drive across town, but they have a wood oven that was shipped from Italy. If you like thin, blistered crust pizza, this is it. Get a margarita (pizza). Also they make a great Old Fashioned.
If you stay near downtown Cedar Falls, Montage has good food and a better wine list in the $$ range. (Their best drink is their Double Standard). Carter House makes good sandwiches and cheese/charcuterie plates. We also like Los Cabos, but that’s mostly because the owners are super nice. The food is mediocre Mexican.
Go Panthers!!

I believe the most important question is where can you get a good steak dinner?

Then you have not been to Springfield...
For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Murray

Steak- The Alley Steakhouse
Pizza- Matt B’s Main St Pizza- by the slice, NY style. Really good. For Chicago style, Mugsy’s.
Unsung heroes- the Meat and Three. Not fancy at all. Rudy’s
Burger- Off The Hoof,
Ethnic- Los Portales (Mexican), Jasmine (Thai/Sushi), Willow Bistro (Mediterranean, eclectic)

Regional fare- not in Murray but nearby.

Doe’s Eat Place- steaks, Mississippi tamales- Paducah
Freight House- farm to table, fantastic- Paducah
Pattis- the pork chops are fantastic but lots of good stuff to be had. -Grand Rivers
Moustos- Italian Paris, TN

Bars- the Big Apple- Mexican food and drinks. Tap 216- bar and grill. The Keg- dive bar with food.

Decent steak in Terre Haute at Stables. Not USDA Prime but pretty high Choice. The bar with all the ISU sports memorabilia is the Ballyhoo....walking distance to the arena. Also recommend pre-game at Copper Bar.

The Alley Steakhouse in Murray was a victim of COVID. No longer open.

The best place to eat in Murray is the Keg.
