How many players have left Murray? Seems like the entire team.

I think there were more redshirts and Freshmen getting less minutes than usual last year because of COVID interrupting 2 high school years and players getting extra COVID years. Lot of interesting Freshmen around the Valley sat last year. Drake has an interesting one in Conor Enright. Loyola had a good Freshmen class that mostly sat. And yeah those teams were competing and SIU wasn't (I thought at least Wonders should have played last year) but I don't think it 100% means they won't pan out. I will say though that it lowers my expectations a bit though, although I'm hearing good things about Ebube.

To the original point, SIU can compete next year but they'd need to hit on 2 or more transfers. Right now they have only one open scholarship and it's to replace their 3rd best player, Ben Coupet. If they bring back the same team and just replace Coupet, I can't imagine they're going to win the Valley barring some drastic improvements from their returning players.

Hopefully, we have more than one scholarship to hand out to become a deeper and more importantly a more athletic team. Ben Harvey is a question mark... Will he ever play again?

Add Trae Hannibal for Murray.

Only two scholarship players who played last season remain - Nicolas McMullen and Daquan Smith, who averaged 7.7 ppg collectively. I wouldn't be surprised if they leave too, and we have an entirely new roster.

I hate the portal.

That is brutal. Was hoping the Valley would have at least one top 25 team next season.
The portal has ruined college hoops.

Added. I wonder what the new (old) Murray coach says to these guys that has promoted mass exodus. We're still early in the "portal season" but even ILST has only had 3 guys enter and 2 didn't play much until Chatman went down.

I know ILST new Coach Pedon has met with all the guys from 30-45 min each and is continuing conversations. I expect more to enter in the next couple of weeks but am surprised the Birds aren't already in the 6-7 range, considering they had 18 guys on the team last season (walk-ons included).

This "transfer portal" business needs to stop. The NCAA isn't helping these kids out by letting them transfer.

In the case of the Murray State players, their coach left so hard to blame them. But yeah, in the case of a Terry Roberts or Noah Carter, the grass might not be greener on the other side.

Here is my proposal.

1.A player is allowed to transfer one time with no penalty, regardless of coach's status.

2. If your coach leaves or gets fired, you can transfer any time.(BS Example not considering interconference transfer rules: A freshman starts his year at ILST in 2021-22, Muller gets fired, the player leaves. Player transfers to Evansville for the 22-23 season, Lickliter gets fired or quits and the player can transfer again...and so on.)

3. If a player wants to transfer a second time, they can, but they will be required to redshirt one season and be ineligible for games during the first semester of the season after their RS year but use a whole year of eligibility (they will sit 1.5 years and burn 1 year of eligibility). No waivers will be given for any reason in this case. This also includes grad transfers.

I support a kids decision if he doesn't feel he is in the best situation. But when you get to be a Teddy Allen, Zach Lofton, or Charlie Moore where you end up at 4-5 different schools, that's where a kid needs to look in the mirror. No kid should ever need to play for 3 or more D1 schools over 5 years.
