He should have a D1 head job. Maybe he is waiting. Who knows. He did a great job at InSt.

If you said "good job," I could have lived with that, but great job? Sorry, no.

I don't care if he had to work an extra job at Arby's on the weekends to make ends meet, not going to call that a great job. I've attended every Arch Madness other than the "main" COVID year, and pretty sure I saw Lansing's Sycs get their a---- handed to them early in the event on the vast majority of occasions. That's not great.

I don't want to derail this thread too much with Lansing talk. But as someone who has donated 10's of thousands to Indiana State let me reply to a few things:

1. He has been interviewed on sports talk radio recently and said he has a few opportunities in the NBA he is working on. He was a finalist for the USD job and it went to Steve Lavin.

2. There were bad Arch Madness losses, yes. But his last year he made the Arch Madness semi's, finished 4th in the MVC after finishing 3rd the year before....and had a heck of a lot of talent returning after back-to-back winning seasons. All with the lowest budget in the MVC in one of the poorest markets in the MVC. Our AD and Prez said it wasn't good enough and got rid of him knowing it would cause the program to implode....and it did. Mind you us ISU boosters had to endure the administration tanking our football program on purpose in the 2000's (thinking they could go non-scholarship) and now we endure blowing up a winning basketball program also on purpose. And they ask us for money with a straight face. LOL

Back to the thread....good luck Coach Ragland.

When do YOU think the college basketball season starts? This isn't high school. The season doesn't start on the first official practice day.

Whether you think so or not, Ziggy needs to make a hire ASAP so they can get a summer program rolling. They way he fired the entire staff ensures a washout for this year's recruiting class and most of next seasons. The only saving grace is that the transfer portal is full of players - stop-gap players to be sure and by the time UE gets a staff they'll be leftovers - but at least they can fill a roster with them.

I get that a new AD wants to make a splash, blah, blah, blah...but he really neutered an already struggling program with this and surely made it more difficult to find a competent coach.[/quote]

Now that the Aces Staff and Roster are complete; with a staggering approx 5 months to go before the first tip; I’m wondering if you still think your panic attack was worth it…

I don't know if Ragland and this staff will move the needle much, but replacing the previous staff was nothing less than necessary. As a member of a conference that finds itself less relevant now, it is important for UE to drag the fans back into the conversation. That will happen instantly.

Depending on the schedule, I think the Aces will likely double their attendance now. That's not great but the days of 10,000 in the arena are long ago a memory. Ragland has filled out a roster with interesting new faces, many of whom will be getting their first real chance at proving they belong in college basketball. I don't see this as a .500 team just yet, but it will be an improved team. How I know this is a trade secret.

I am amused at the general nature of the comments that disparage this hire. Honestly, when exactly does Ragland earn a chance at building a mid-major program?

The University will have to do a lot of advertising, ie,billboard's, radio stations, and coaches
making appearances at events to bring fans back to the games. Then if they make the games
exciting and start winning we can hopefully start averaging around 5000.

Evansville will get the usual bump in attendance most teams get after a coaching hire; given Ragland is local and added popular former UE star Wilson, and UE normally had decent attendance it should be a nice increase initially.

As far as his experience, that's always a dilemma for a young coach at the D-1 level. You like to see that progression from assistant to associate HC to maybe a HC at a lower level before they take the HC job at this level, but doesn't always work that way. The higher up position wise you are hiring , the more you like to minimize the risk , but honestly, UE was at a spot where they could take risks to blow it up and start fresh, and so they did. Whether he proves out , time will tell; I think it's relatively easy to catch a little momentum and make a move for a year or two in the MVC up the pecking order. But I think breaking into and staying in that top 3-4 consistently is difficult, and becoming more so because of the dynamics at play for player movement. He's got his chance, lets see what he does.
