That'd be an interesting move by the Sun Belt. I realize MSU (the university itself) is doing well, but the major athletic programs haven't been particularly noteworthy, and nothing I've seen from their AD screams "ready for the next level".

Random thoughts...

  • If I'm MO St, I'm sticking with the MVC. You can't buy hundreds of millions of dollars of free media exposure with a run in the NCAA Tournament with a $2 million per year football media rights deal.
  • As someone pointed out in this thread, exposure in the NCAA Tournament, especially if you win, is FAR greater than any also-ran FBS league like CUSA, Sun Belt, MAC, etc.
  • When the Power 5 breaks away (or Power 4 with all the merging) from the NCAA, the rest of the FBS schools will be left out in the cold.
  • A school like those in the MVC are much more likely to gain national recognition with basketball than football. It's not even close.
  • Of the eight public institutions in Kentucky, Murray is consistently third behind UK and UL in many national rankings.
  • Historically WKU is better than Murray, but the last 20 years or so since WKU went FBS, Murray has a better head-to-head series with them and more success in the NCAA tournament by far.

Here's my honest thought. Missouri State football has historically been a bottom dweller, at least in my lifetime. Sure they're doing well under Bobby Petrino right now, but how well will they do if and when he leaves? In my view they take a very serious risk of having a bad FBS football program in the Sun Belt, which is also an inferior basketball league. Before last season, 2009 was the last time the Bears actually had a 6 win season. I get that you have 1 extra game to get it done in FBS, but still.

Even with his off field past hiring Petrino shows their intent. If the Sun Belt comes call they are going.

How long would this move benefit Mo State? All signs pointing to a 2 conference AFC-NFC style "Super Conference" model coming to college football once the big schools break away from the NCAA. You think Sun Belt teams would be included? I don't think so.

I see the Power Conferences breaking off into their own "league" and FCS football becoming the "premiere NCAA football offering."

How that works with hoops? I don't know. But as all have said, the money is in football. Look at NDSU as the perfect example...sometimes it's better to be a big fish in a smaller pond. Say Mo State goes to the Sun Belt and then makes 1 "who give a crap bowl game," one game above .500. Does that paycheck justify the move? Even though within the next decade they'll be left in the dust?

All speculation, of course, but the P5 is going to breakaway from the NCAA. How many teams get to be involved in the NFL feeder league? IDK, but it'd be interesting to take say, 40 teams, and the bottom 4 get relegated every year while the top 4 of the "FCS" gets promoted. Logistical nightmare but it'd make those games at the end of the year with bad teams more meaningful and entertaining. I don't fully understand how futbol regulates across the pond, but they seem to have it figured out. I kind of like that idea for a future model.

I agree with you on the future of football in college. We just don't know what to expect right now except that the big powers are going to align to help themselves. That is going to cut out the bottom of the FBS and leave them along with the FCS to figure out what to do with the pieces. I wouldn't jump anywhere right now, so that it is easier to figure what is the best landing place when the higher ups are done moving. They are taking 60-70 teams with them. Once they are done, there will be time to figure what is the best fit for everyone else with football and the rest of the sports.

Is a low level FBS team always going to get in a bowl game by going .500?

Tennessee State would be a better option.

Yes. Every 6-6 team is guaranteed. ESPN will actually create an extra bowl if they need to to accommodate.

Frankly any of our football schools are gone with an FBS offer from anybody other than CUSA and they should be. Every bit of the money is in football which kills me as a basketball guy.
