I have UNI and Belmont both near here, but UNI should finish higher due to the edge in coaching.

Belmont last season was as slow and unathletic as they have been since they came to the OVC. Before Belmont wouldn’t get dinged as hard as their overall talent level would indicate because Rick Byrd was on the sidelines. Let me tell you, that guy could absolutely coach. Jury is still out on Alexander.

UNI has done a pretty good job at being slow and unathletic over the years, and yet, they are consistently an upper-division league team. Also, the Valley ranked 30th in tempo last year.

And Rick Byrd did as well, but Belmont isn't UNI, and Rick Byrd isn't walking through the door.

Unfortunately, it sounds like Austin Phyfe won't be back anytime soon, if at all, based on reports from UNI's local media day today, due to ongoing health concerns.

If Jacobson gets this team, without Phyfe, into the upper half, I think he'd have my COY vote. Some of those freshmen would have to really ball out.

Kid has spent 4 years just never catching a break. Great kid, great attitude and his body just will not cooperate. He's 'student administrating' at my daughter's middle school and she talks all the time about how awesome he is and that all the kids love him because of how well he relates to them. He's going to have a long, successful career in education and the world is going to be better for it.

Sad news to hear about Phyfe; hope he is able to play some at least this year - he really elevates the team and is one of the better bigs in the conference when fully healthy.

I hate to hear that. Speedy recovery to him.

Just learned that UNI lost Austin Phyphe today. Had I known that I would have voted them here. I thought with him they were definitely top half and maybe better. Without him?

I still think its Belmont, but without Phyfe, UNI is much closer.
